MESA, there's your problem. Does intel have any proprietary drivers you could use?

is it a laptop? in other words I'm asking if it's possible to install a different GPU (preferably nvidia)

oh well, least I know what floatvtx does now

I couldn't find any intel drivers for GNU/Linux on the intel site. Can you see if you can get an nvidia card into your system?

if you can, jsut follow these steps to install the proprietary drivers

1. Make sure you're running the newest version of the linux kernel currently in the debian repository
2. Download the proprietary drivers from nvidia.com
3. ctrl + alt + F1
4. enter root as the name, and enter the password afterwards.
5. apt-get install module-assistant
6. m-a update
7. m-a prepare
8 sh NVIDIA* -a
9 Just say yes to absolutely everything.

10. Launch up sauer and enjoy :p

If you're on an Intel chip, you want the i810 driver, I believe...
Back up /etc/X11/xorg.conf and either edit it by hand or run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", selecting your preferred resolutions and the i810 driver.
When you're done, reboot.
(There are other i* drivers. If i810 doesn't work, try the others.)

Oh, and if you do have an nVidia card, the best way to install drivers would be Envy: http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
