Graphics in Sauerbraten looking like screenshots

by afidesimo on 12/07/2007 13:16, 20 messages, last message: 12/20/2007 23:11, 2809 views, last view: 04/21/2024 22:20

Why is it that when I play Sauerbraten that it looks bland and low-res graphics (textures, etc), without any beautiful water or reflections as is contained in the screenshots. What do I do to see it? Why does it look crappy and bad?

I tried editing the in-game graphics setting and strangely turning on more advanced things such as bloom is problematic and the window closes strangely. Turning on anti-aliasing also seems to produce no effect.

how fast is your graphic card?
how long ago did you buy your graphic card/PC?
is it a laptop machine?

Well, some laptops are getting pretty darn fast nowadays... I play Sauer on mine, and I get 130 FPS on metl4 with a res of 1280x800 and all shaders pumped to max. With bloom on I get around 80.

#6: Sauerbraten.

I play Sauerbraten on a MacBook Pro.

1440x900 With shaders on water, and a lot of the time I am getting +/- 300FPS

Oh, and totally off topic, but did Aard do anything with the game Crysis like he did with Far Cry?

I'm having problems with the lightmaps in the summer release. With the previous version of sauer, the lighting was clean and consistent; now I get what I can only describe as block-like lighting, where large sections of maps are lit in inconsistent blocks. Looks rough. I'm playing on a Mac PowerBook G4, with an ATI RAGE Mobility 128 video controller. I excpect that my machine is to blame, but it's strange that this problem only occurs with the new version. Any tips?

Here's a screenshot of metl4 to show what I'm describing above:

I've recalculated lighting at every setting, with different error & precision values, but I get the same results....hmmm....

While this is probably unrelated, what're the values of the /texreduce /texcompress and /maxtexsize variables.

The textures appear to have their quality reduced quite drastically, so I'm curious what the value of those settings are. If tex reduce is above 0, try setting that to zero. As for the others, if they're at 0, ignore them, if they're above 0 and below 1024 try setting them to 1024.

Still, I'd much rather just blame ATI and do nothing :P

I wish people would stop hosting their screenshots on download-only sites. It's so much easier just to click a link and view the image...

Odd problem there. I have no clue about the technical stuff, but it looks almost like what happens when you try to edit a map after a light recalc.

Agreed--there's a nice site called TinyPic, use it.

On the screenshot, I can't see anything wrong... Could you post a better one?

And there's sites like Google's Picasa where you can host all your crap in one spot. I do :)

Thanks for the suggestions, Hirato, but the issue is not texture related. Sorry for the 3rd party download, everyone. I agree it's annoying...almost as annoying as posting a response that has nothing to do with the original questions or issues raised. At any rate, I think the patches released a few months ago have something to do with lightmap fixes, but since a mac OS patch hasn't been released, I can't tell. Here's hoping the issue will be resolved in the winter edition...

Did you already try to delete your config.cfg file ? Often when settings are messed up, this is the only fast way to fix that. Though you'd have to setup some of your game settings again then, such as your ingame-name, fov, gamma, resolution, but this can be done quickly...

Maybe it would be a good idea to move your old config.cfg to another place, as soon as you start Sauer without that file and quit then, it writes a new one.

Myshkin: What Mac do you have?

I suspect a video card somewhere around a GeForce 4 MX which would mean a Mac somewhere around an iMac G4.

I find the best way is to put all the settings you want in autoexec.cfg, so when config.cfg gets deleted or has old settings, you can keep on truckin'.

rock.n.roll: not only are you a genius for making lostinspace, you've also restored my faith in humanity...replacing the config.cfg file absolutely fixed everything. Thanks man!!

Not to deflate your joy or depreciate rock.n.roll, but I believe that deleting config.cfg is the popular go-to when you have a problem with sauer.

Then why didn't anyone else think of it? >.< It looked more like a hardware issue...
