follow these steps for success:
download sauerbraten from official website
tar xf sauerbraten*bz2
cd sauerbraten
./sauerbraten_unix -w640 -h480 -t
/coop foo
/savemap foo
"wrote map file packages/base/foo.ogz"
Success.

I'm not an avid *nix user, but I do know this is a common issue, and I know why it happens...but, how the hell do people get *nix running without knowing about directory permissions? I think it's a very bad idea to jump on the *nix bandwagon, without even knowing how to allow yourself to write to your own HD!!

I myself am idiotic enough to not know how to save maps as well, but I am running XP. Plus, I am having trouble adding NPCs to maps!
