Would using design patterns in SB comply with SBs minimalistic approach, or harm the design? Appears quite the conundrum.

actually, design patterns are really cool. The idea behind it is well intended, and the stuff its creator writes (Christopher Alexander) is very interesting, I read several of his books (on architecture, not software).
It just works the same in software engineering as in religion, where somehow people manage to interpret "respect thy neighbour" as "kill everyone who thinks differently", design patterns get applied blindly by people who think they will solve problems if used on absolutely everything.
