New hud progress

by JadeMatrix on 11/13/2007 00:01, 102 messages, last message: 06/02/2008 23:22, 39244 views, last view: 05/18/2024 22:46

The topic for all discussion on my hud concept, loosely based on geartrooper's hudguns.

Version 1:

Version 2:
http://www.maj.com/gallery/kofan/sauer/newskin_example_2.png

As you can see, this is entirely useless as is. Aside from any æsthetic problems, it doesn't currently work with Sauerbraten at all. Thus, I need someone who can either
1. edit the code/shader that defines the HUD characteristics or
2. tell me what code/shader defines the HUD characteristics so that I can figure it out myself.

Info:
The hud will be optimized for resolutions 800x600 and up. This means that it will just fit at full resolution for 800x600, and be shrunk for anything smaller.
But, you may say, it's a ridiculous size for widescreen displays! No problem (for you): the hud will expand only horizontally at the bare point between the last big blue part (how scientific) and the fps.

Any questions, comments go here.

Too much stuff.. people around here like tiny, slick, and straight to the point. Minimalist would be the term I think.

It can look cool and shinny, but make it small and less dominant.

whatever the case stick with it and refine it until it works. Its a very good start and I think Aard's ol' hud could use a facelift. ;P

I'll work on a few slight modifications, such as removing excess 'holder' and getting rid of shine, and see what people think.

There will of course be different skins available, some would probably be more preferable.

Alright, new 'screenshot':

1440x900, full resolution. This is what it would actually look like.

Umm well get rid of the "holders" :)

Shine is fine though.

Try to decrease the shine by 25%-50% (something around there) and change the blue to a slightly more \"grayish\" blue (since the default text colour is white, and therefore would be more clear on such a background), that should allready change quiet something :) Otherwhise I quiet like it.

#8: Crosshair info

by jbuk2k7s cookie has gone on 11/13/2007 17:45

Not to hijack your thread, but I had an idea for a way to show information around the crosshair, so that you don\'t have to divert your vision from the centre of teh screen. I would probably make it more transparent though.

The left set of bars is health, each segment being 10, the right set of bars is armour, each bit is 20 armour, and the parts are colour-coded to match the yellow/green armour. The number Is the ammo left.

FreeSpace 2, lol

I like it, but I\'m guessing it would be hard to do properly, so it wouldn\'t get in the way (that\'s what most players dislike around here). I see this as more of an issue with Aard/eihrul, in keeping with Sauer\'s \'simplicity.\'

I\'ll play around with the concept, but I think your\'s does the trick.

@zheddo:
The default text color is white with a heavy black border to assist with contrast.

I think it's still much too obtrusive. And I think that the gloss does not fit the overall style somehow.

I don't want to rant, just what I think. ;-)

Some fixes:

Whoops, forgot to fix translucency.

@jbuk2k7:
Try submitting your idea to the 'Most Wanted Features' thread. I'll be glad to work it in if it get approved, but right now I'm concentrating on just redesigning what is already there.

Now it looks too flat. :(
Give it some "pop", but don't make it as garish as the shiny ones.

Actually, I like it more like that. The flatter it is, the less distracting I find it. This is actually the first iteration of the concept that I'd actually support.

I like that one better, but I don't think that the circles fit sauer's theme too well - It is CUBE 2. It looks nicer with out the shine though.

Hmm, I've got a new idea. I'll throw it together sometime in the next 24 hours, but it should have neither holder, shine, or circles, but still be original (and thus will still excite criticism ;) )

@JadeMatrix "..on my hud concept.." - so this is a mod and/or the objective is to photoshop some ideas to see if it appeals first to us all and then to Aard?

To be honest, every concept you've posted so far just doesn't appeal to me at all. Far too cluttered, everything is oversized (in a bad way)..

I myself have always been a fan of extremely minimalistic huds. I need the numbers and all (health, armour, etc) but in the most non-intrusive way as possible.

Having numbers around the crosshair wouldn't be all that great either IMO, but perhaps something in the vein of the small ammo and health meters surrounding the crosshair in Half-Life 2?

If you don't like his hud, I'm sure he'll provide an option like "showfancyhud 0".
