See General Thread #772, 774, 783 .. there's also a search function, although you might want to check messages in proximity to any hits you get in case they address the subject without your terms.

I'll quote the good part:
"Cube, through FMUSIC, supports the following formats: .mid, .rmi, .mod, .s3m, .xm, .it, .sgt, generically all called MIDIs or MODs as appropriate. Through FSOUND, it supports RAW/.WAV/.MP2/.MP3/.OGG/.WMA/.ASF"

MIDis are made with MIDI software, and the classic MOD formats (MOD, S3M, XM, IT) can be made with MODPlug Tracker (Windows, http://www.modplug.com ) or even on an Amiga ;) .

As well as the issues with MP3s I mentioned in #772, there's no way to make them loop or stop them. They probably should not be used.

Someone asked about .IX (or should that be XI?) .. that's an XM tracker exported sample, basically a WAV, and not usable by itself.

The music is played through .cfg files associated with the map, or by starting it in the console, with the same commands (MUSIC pathfrompackagesfolder/filename.extension).

So, I have a lot of oggs, could I use them as the music for maps?

See that #772, cube manual, learn the stuff, experiment. Or convert them to a MOD format as I have also described. I haven't checked if the current Cube version has implemented the version of FMOD with the ogg bug fixed (see fmod.org).

I should remind you that, if you don't have permission to distribute the oggs, then distributing them with a map would be illegal (and if you made the music yourself, I doubt that's the only format you have possession of, although it is a great one in higher bitrates). You can play them ingame yourself, though.

If it wasn't for copyright issues, I'd probably include some of the lovely King Crimson MIDIs from http://www.elephant-talk.com/audio.htm (check it out, especially the Bruford bits, these are known and tolerated by the band but could cause trouble if they start popping up elsewhere).

Sorry for the hardline copyright stance, but I've seen how difficult it is to give anything away if it's not illegal, and find it rather disgusting therefore.

You just place the song in a folder. Say it's at packages/songs/songname.mod, the you would type /music songs/songname.mod. If you always want it in that map, place that command in the cfg file associated with that map.

Just one thing about music.. If you include any with a map, please make it an original Mod or midi. It's really REALLY annoying to download a 5 meg zip when the map itself is 10kb.

or i guess if you really want to distribute some non original music make SURE it's optional :)

"It's really REALLY annoying to download a 5 meg zip when the map itself is 10kb."

Has this happened yet?

And it would be better if the map was bigger? ...well it would be, not the map file bigger necessarily, but the map(s) itself. Anyway I would hope someone would see that as an inhibition to downloading and therefore avoid it. Standalone music tends to need to be bigger than level music, since it's the main attraction.

I get the feeling this is directed at me, since I'm the only one doing that.

as far as i no it's not directed towards any particular person, its just advice for the future

Nah... i'm not targetting it at anyone. It's just when i download a map, i want the map, and i don't care about the music. A good example is some pack of doom maps released a while ago. The maps themselves can't have taken more than a meg or two with textures and all, but they packaged it in a installer exe that put it up to about 5 megs.

But well chosen music adds to a level. I would be happier if each Cube map came with 20megs of music. :)

Music doesn't add THAT much. pick between a 10 second download or an hour... I think it's pretty obvious wich map you'll try out ;)

If the music + levels + texs is no larger than an equivalent sized Quake level pack, that's reasonable. 500K will go on dialup before I can finish checking these boards. Plus, if the configs call a certain music, then it doesn't work right without... and that DooM pack may have been reasonable by my standards. I've downloaded as much as 150 MB on dialup ... of the 80 M+ d/l's, I'd say a third were worth it (not that it's quick gratification).

Nehahra, for example, ws greatly enhanced by the probably 35 MB of sounds.

ive downloaded huge 250mb files on my 56k, but i still feel that their should always be an option to decrease file sizes when possible

I have broadband, so even if something takes an hour to download I can leave it in the background and keep surfing. But if I had 56k I would still schedule it for when I sleep, and prefer the extra goodies.
