Using the 8.42 drivers, my x1300 in Linux now finally ties my 6600 in Sauerbraten, and performance is more or less equivalent to Windows. Horray! ALL HAIL AMD! I can finally remove all the dumbass driver hacks I had in Sauer for ATI!

Sweetness :)
Are you talking about the drivers based upon the released specification?

No. The latest version of the fglrx drivers, which they based on a unified driver architecture rather than the old crappy licensed codebase they were using before.

Yeah, just installed them, and AIGLX runs. :)
Now to figure out this new-fangled Compiz thing.
If these drivers are actually up to par, my next video card may not be an nVidia.

SheeEttin, don't go that far. ATI hardware still sucks compared to nvidia's latest offerings. ;)

The RV670 is expected to be a better price/performance than Nvidia's mid-high end cards.
Basically the verdict is still out on the Radeon HD series.

Well this is great news, although my last ATI Linux system was just upgraded to an Nvidia card so I miss the boat :(
If it supported my laptop Radeon 7500 though it'd be a different thing altogether :(
Still fantastic news.

From Phoronix. That's the most extreme change, but on average the cards were twice as fast.

Err what? The Catalyst control centre uses the .net framework to run for goodness sakes. Yeah, I need to download 300mb of .net updates from Windows update before I can even set my AA and AF.
And ATI cards are still poor value compared to Nvidia imo.

Now that ATI has free access to AMD patents and vice versa, the quality of ATI hardware just might go up a notch. Who knows...

Let's hope so, they could certainly use a boost.

Yeah, the ATI RadeonHD drivers are fast *and* open-source. In a few months (hopefully), so will the NVidia equivalent, Noveau.

I was talking about ATI's proprietary drivers. Every single open source 3D driver is really crap as far as OpenGL compliance and performance goes.

eihrul: even if their hardware is inferior and the drivers are not yet up to par, my next card will certainly be an ATI. Free software wins above all else.
