Question: Mac OS X Open-GL support

by SanHolo on 10/17/2007 09:00, 7 messages, last message: 10/18/2007 12:17, 1011 views, last view: 04/23/2024 14:57

This is mainly to the developers, I hope some find time to answer shortly.

Someone recently claimed that Open-GL support in Mac OS X is not standard and miserable.

How true is that?
Could it be better? To what extent?

Not true.
There are occasional little bugs in most OpenGL implementations - for example there is a fair share of ati_bug, nvidia_bug, apple_bug workarounds in sauebraten ;-)

well i don't think we need an thread for ever wild claim "someone" makes ;-)

more to the point, apples GLSL implementation is known to be pretty bad, but i'm sure things will be better in leopard

True for sure. =)
I just had to ask, it was bothering me - the claim came from an EA-developer.

Thank you guys for your inputs!

Most of the Major Game companies are still skeptical about games on the mac. Its best not to listen to them. OpenGL is open source therefore better than direct x, therefore pwns microsoft. As time goes on, OpenGL will get better, as will everything else... but i have a feeling OpenGL will soon be dominant in the Gaming market, just because apple and linux are gaining market share at rates never before seen... the next 7 years will be very interesting....

hhehehehhee......

Some actual stats would be nice to see, opinion is worth only as much as the speaker's credibility. Aard, eihrul, do you know anything cold and hard, as actual developers?

From my readings, OpenGL is certainly doing well. However, history tends to progress in sporadic jumps, so my outsider opinion has little value. We should keep in mind that most of us have this outsider view, and aren't gonna see the turns coming.

Apple's OpenGL implementation has more bugs than average. Average being what one would find on the Linux and Windows OpenGL implementations.

Also, OpenGL is *NOT* open source. OpenGL is nothing more than a standard. DirectX is also a standard, just one that isn't decided by a committee. The difference is that Microsoft is the only platform that implements the DirectX standard, and the only one to direct its evolution, but anyone wanting to implement DirectX on another platform is free to do so (much as the Wine people do for their emulator), while OpenGL is pretty much on all major platforms except the XBox.

lol. Saue has at least two apple developers on the team - so don't worry!
