#1: Different problem here

by New User on 11/04/2002 23:07

My comp (which supposedly runs over 1ghz w/ more than 200 mb ram) is strugling to display even 5 fps. Could this be my graphics card or incompatibility with the game?

Thanks!

1) what's your graphics card?
2) install the latest drivers for it
3) lather
4) rinse
5) repeat

Last time I checked, I had an S3 ProSavage PM133. I may have butchered the name though. Their driver support is horrific (I\'ve heard this as well as experienced it). I think it may have issues with OpenGL and/or Windows XP. When I ran cube, the newer lighting system didn\'t work either.

Thanks ALOT in advance,
New user

If you go back in the forums about 3 months, you'll see someone got their Savage to do better by setting the desktop settings to the same as for playing Cube... which should probably be 640x480 (modify cube.bat), 16 bit (65536) colors.

#5: linux & voodoo3 w/xfree 4.2

by cobblepot on 11/06/2002 02:34

I'm having problems with cube using linux and xfree 4.2 with a voodoo3 card. All text shows up as white boxes. Menus are unreadable. Water surface and some textures are soild white. I searched the forums using "fonts" as my subject and found others have had the same problem, however no solutions have been presented.

If their drivers aren't going to support OpenGL then all you can do is swap it out for a software renderer. Then sitback and enjoy the slideshow.

Lol. I hope that doesn't have to happen with anyone.

I searched that old thread and found exactly the driver I needed. It runs at a tolerable 30 fps. I will try to make my desktop specs the same as cube's next time to improve this (the screenshots have crazy numbers I can only dream of).

Once again, thanks alot
- you have a new player alright

Anyone else in these forums running on a Radeon 9700 Pro? I just bought one and although I am getting INCREDIBLE frame rates (300 - 400 FPS on some maps), there are some strange anomolies.

When I fire weapons, they all seem to travel no farther than my face. For instance, I shoot the shotgun, and I see the yellow particles right there in front of me and not away from me against the wall I am facing.

I'm sure you can imagine what the rocket launcher does. :-(

This is running on Windows XP.

First of all, are you sure you have the latest drivers? Secondly, kick yourself for buying Radeon.

First, yeah.

Secondly, the Radeon 9700 is superior to the Geforce4, so no, don't kick yourself, kick Pushplay instead.

GF4 is older. Bedides, Radeon has traditionally had piss poor opengl support, which is probably more of a concern to Topher than an extra 5fps or the dx9 support which is just going to sit there and rot until the games come out for it.

I'd count more on DX support than GL support. But the GF cards handle both pretty much perfectly anyway. IIRC, cube uses a few GL features that's not very commonly used, so that should explain why there's a lot of driver related problems flying around. I could be wrong tho.

That is sad. Older ATI cards had this bug (which simply means badly implemented OpenGL drivers btw), then for the newer radeons it got fixed. now with the R300/9700 drivers its back? that is quite amazingly stupid.

Dunno, according to Tom's hardware guide and other sites I looked at, NVidia is on their way out. Not even their next card being released is supposed to compare to the speed of the 9700 Pro. Yes, I do have the latest drivers, If they went back to an earlier implementation of certain features, it was probably for a reason, not to apease the cube fans.

Funny thing is, this card runs every other openGL game, screensaver, etc, faster than anything I've ever seen and no, I haven't had a single problem with any other game or application, cube is the fist one I've found having a problem.

I'd kick Pushplay if I could, but my leg won't stretch to Canada......

Yeah, I've seen that review. I don't think nVidia is on the way out just yet. Carmack seemed to be more impressed with nvidia than radeon, that's gotta be worth something.

Maybe try some older drivers Topher, see what happens.

again, the fact that other games work and cube doesn't, doesn't mean it's a cube problem. I use completely legal opengl, just it is something which other games appearently do not use, and driver writers seem to prefer to just test with a few popular games rather than write fully correct implementations.

Oh, I never meant to imply that there was something wrong with the OpenGL implementation in cube. I think cube is fantastic. What you've been able to do with such little code is simply amazing!

Pushplay, I was thinking the same thing about rolling back those drivers. I'll give that shot.

#20: Terrible framerate

by Townk on 12/06/2002 18:41

Hi, I have an Athlon XP 1.7 with 512Mb of RAM and a NVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200.

When I start cube it shows me 513 fps but when I try to move its like 5-10 fps!

I'm using KDE but I try run it on xinit and same thing happen
