Natural Teammates

It's occurred to me that clan members might want to preferrentially play on the same team, so how about a system of "natural teammates"?

The way that this could work is that players can set a "clan", and the team-allocation algorithm attempts to allocate them to the same team. If this proves impossible, then it takes the /opposite/ approach of attempting to balance the clan evenly between good and evil, treating the match as a "clan match with guests".

Perhaps the clan could also have associated with it a preferred allocation as "good" or "evil". Allocating the "most potent" cumulative presence first could resolve contention here. By having a default clan name the same as your player name, the better players could be rewarded by having a lot of say over their default team allocation.

If the clan names are /not/ communicated in the HUD (unless players integrate something into their player name), you can have some low-level security against outsider attachment.

I don't see a point. Just /team team

Expect that the teams then become unbalanced.

So that's where /setteam comes in.

Okay, I get that it isn't strictly necessary, but the idea is to have it as a kind of smooth and automatic functionality that puts no-one's backs up and makes the game a little bit more fun.

Auto-allocation from the the strongest clan to the weakest (including "one member" clans), and the strongest to the weakest within the clan (if collectively the clan is too strong) with a default team is on one hand a preference for playing together with your (hopefully!) mates, and on the other a (small) reward for comming near the top.

Of course you can just type /team and /setteam, but the idea is to simply have a fun default behaviour.

Your whole argument is very weak. What if clan wants to fight in a spread way?
How will servers recognise that you're in a clan in the first place?

If people want to fight in groups then it is up to them - using the allocated mastermode options.

Question for the room: would it be possible to create a bot that takes master (or admin even) and then allocates teams as Morosoph suggests?

Just curious.

#7: Good plan

The bot would have to know player stats 'though, ie. it would have to know what the server knows.

The bot would also need to be able to identify clans (maybe identified with any matching combination of brackets in the name?)

Perhaps privileged access to info for admin (who could run the bot) would be enough to make it work?

@ Drakas: I was thinking of a /clan (or similar) command, since it is more permanent than your team.

You make a fair point about preferred mode, and maybe that could also be an option, so that maximum scatter, or simply "ignore" could also be options (again the strongest player's preference wins). No default team could also be an option.

The trouble with mastermode is that you throw away the auto-allocation intelligence. With this plan, the allocation is only made if the end result won't be too unbalanced.

Hmmm, does not sound bad. Adding another tag (clan), which wouldn't be changed even if you changed your team (which always is for the current game only) could work.

I dont like clans because when I was in a clan, I would get kicked from servers because I was in a certain clan. I like the clan idea, but people need to not kick people from servers just because they are in a certain clan. If they want to kick other clans, then they should make their own clan servers.
