Grenade Launcher

While the current grenade launcher is very good, it is not usable with the upcoming hudhands and warrants a redesign. I am just about tapped out for ideas for now. So I'm asking 2d artists and 3d artists to come up with concepts. The most popular one will be used. If you can't model it in 3d yourself I will. Some ideas to keep in mind;

Moving parts are great!
Plasma, like flowing through tubes, is possible.
Glowing/shiny/metal parts are possible.
The reload animation for the grenade launcher is very short due to firing speed. Keep this aspect in mind when designing the reload apperture.

Post some drawings or screenshots here and we'll all decide on the best which will be used. And don't hesitate to ask about design possibilities if you get stuck.

How about some sketches? Going high poly on a design without approval might be a waste of time.

IMHO HUD hands arn't needed at all for a game like Sauerbraten (see Quake3/UT2004 as an example for games without hud arms).
The weapons just need to be designed with that in mind.

They just add a lot of work and (since convincing hands are extremely hard to model and animate) will probably lower the graphical quality of the HUD weapons.

Besides, Sauerbraten is all about simplicity right? :p

The current gl has its own set of hands. And we are worrying about the other weapons. All of them.

Julius the hands are already finished aside from a permanent texture. And I'm actually pretty proud of the one I did for them.

Once again. If you have a gl design in mind, sketch it. Post it. Discuss any design elements you may be unsure of and I or another will do our best to help. We have hands to animate it.

@geartrooper: A untextured hand mesh is maybe 5-10% of the actual work needed, and I can perfectly understand that you are proud of them and want them included (who wouldn't), but I would really strongly suggest that they arn't.

Besides... if the hand mesh isn't actually included in the same file as the HUDgun (which would be needed if there was a real performance benefit from it) have you even though about the difficulties you would get syncronising those animations both during creation (to a lesser extent) and during runtime?

@HanSolo: yes that is the basic idea (but totally unrealted to the topic of the hands) but there is still a lot of work to do I think.

I really like the look of the gauss gun from STALKER. I know it's not a grenade launcher, but the same look would definitely work.

Julius you aren't listening. The hands are finished. They're being used. One set of hands can be used on an infinite number of weapons as long as the tags are there. I've already done the animations for the knife, pistol, and plasma bow. The system works. I'm using it.

Yeah. Not to mention it's totally unrealistic. Having a scope up that high would hugely throw off your aim.

Personally, I rather like the current grenade launcher model. It's relatively realistic, and it seems appropriate.
If a new one MUST be made, I have no clue what it should look like. I can't visualize using a grenade launcher that does the same thing (i.e. throw grenades with that arc) looking like anything else.

That gun looks more like a modified M16. Thats no tanything close to a grenade launcher.

Not meaning to argue, but i didnt see an M203 grenade launcher attached to the bottom of the gun. I think i know what you mean though
