sauerbraten sometimes freezes

by DebianFox on 09/19/2007 16:35, 10 messages, last message: 09/27/2007 16:16, 1707 views, last view: 05/03/2024 09:49

Hi all,

I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy developpement branch with this kernel: Linux 2.6.22-10-generic #1 SMP.

This is my graphic card that I'm using:

2 root@ubuntux $ lspci | grep nVidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce 7600 GS] (rev a2)

If required I can show my xorg.conf file

I'm using the shellscript /usr/bin/sauer to start sauerbarten, which I start with
K -> Run application

#!/bin/bash
cd /home/debianfox/games/sauerbraten/sauerbraten
./sauerbraten

So when I start sauerbraten I receive a report concerning the nvidia texgen bug.

But after playing some time, my sauerbraten just freezes completely and I'm not capable to do anything. It does not react anymore, I can't quit the game, I can't open a console. I can't even start a virtual console (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + F4)

Does anyone know a possible solution?

Thank you

I had the same problem on Ubuntu Feisty. Update your drivers.

I have the newest nvidia-glx driver obtained by apt-get :)

You can consult my xorg.conf file at http://pastebin.com/m2dac1bbe. Please let me know if it's susceptible for any improvement.

I think there is something wrong with the nvidia-glx driver or with the xorg.conf file

2 pieterjan@ubuntux $ glxgears
1419 frames in 5.0 seconds = 283.710 FPS
1332 frames in 5.0 seconds = 266.395 FPS
1335 frames in 5.0 seconds = 266.792 FPS
1472 frames in 5.0 seconds = 294.400 FPS
1348 frames in 5.0 seconds = 269.385 FPS
1416 frames in 5.0 seconds = 283.200 FPS

I mean, I have a GeForce 7600 GS AGP version.

This is a bug in the nvidia drivers. All you can do is POLITELY implore nvidia to fix this issue, and let them know that there is enough of a userbase here that its actually worth their time to fix.

But, the bug in their driver is 6 years old, so I don't expect any miracles.

Isn't there nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new or something to that extent?.. maybe try newer drivers by installing with Envy?

Happens with the newest drivers here, too.

Very very rarely (once in a month) but does happen.

Well lets ask. What specifically must I ask Nvidia to fix? If we petition them it might make a difference.

I know this isn't the support for linux and all that. But when they said the newest drivers, I think they meant you actually download the sh package from nvidia.com and compile the kernel module.

If you have no experience I can try to write a brief how to here. (read on if you wish)

and before you try these, try setting the driver in xorg.conf to vesa instead of nvidia. For some reason the autoconfig of the nvidia installer set that as such, I was surprised myself.

1. Open synpatic, adpet or even kpackage, and apply the filter, 'nvidia' Make sure absolutely no packages with nvidia in it's name is installed (seeing as jsut about all ubuntu distros have nvidia-kernel-common installed)

2 sudo apt-get install module-assistant

3 sudo m-a update && sudo m-a prepare
(The above will installed gcc and everything else you'll need to compile the kernel module

4 Download the package from nvidia (by the sounds of things, 100.14.11 or newer)

5 ctrl+alt+F1 (can be another tty)

6 login in and use sudo to pkill gdm/kdm and to execute init 3 (you may need to repeat step 5)

7 sudo sh NVIDIA*.sh -a

Just say yes to everything and the proprietary drivers should be installed.

now about the nvidia texgen thing in game, just ready it for a command of somesort and by typing nvidia and pressing tab afterwards should show you the one and only nvidia bugfix option so far, turn it off it's something like /nvidia_bugfix_texgen

If you're a bit of a dare daredevil (which I'm guessing you are as you're running the devel version of ubuntu) You can download, compile and use the CVS version of sauer. I myself and possibly many others have found it faster and stabler than the current release.

I myself run a 7600GT so your results for glxgears should be much closer to

50474 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10094.754 FPS
50654 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10130.652 FPS
50671 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10134.131 FPS
51095 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10218.867 FPS

than the amounts you're getting

#10: vesa

by Hirato Kirata on 09/27/2007 16:16

ignore the vesa thing, KDE just confused me. I'm still learning It still years before I'm a pro at Linux if ever.
A question, do you know of ctrl-alt-backspace? that's kind of a kill all. Most of the time it'll take you to the kdm/gdm login screen. Just thought I'd mention it

~Hirato

P.S. sorry ^^
