Do the following:

Go into the directory where you installed Sauerbraten (usually C:\Program Files\Sauerbraten\).

Go into the "bin" directory in there.

Delete "sauerbraten.manifest" and "Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest"

Install one of the following from Microsoft depending on your CPU:

If on a 32 bit Intel or AMD cpu, install this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displaylang=en

If on a 64 bit AMD cpu, install this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=EB4EBE2D-33C0-4A47-9DD4-B9A6D7BD44DA&displaylang=en

If on a 64 bit Intel cpu, install this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=747AAD7C-5D6B-4432-8186-85DF93DD51A9&displaylang=en

Hm... If you do a /newmap then select a bit of ground and do "/newent light 16 255 0 0; calclight" (making sure fullbright is off), it looks no different than when fullbright is on?

Specs would help. If it's a laptop, then there's a good chance it has integrated graphics, which are well known to have buggy drivers for 3d gaming.

Even the Mobility Radeon 7500 in my laptop has poor drivers, stupid ATI.

Install drivers. Vista's default ones are rubbish.
