Idea with glass and refraction

Why dont put some types of glass with different refractions on each ?

Ummm... Glass, unless rounded, does not refract light most of the time, at least not enough for it to be really noticable.

I guess you could always play with the shaders...

While on this subject, people should realise that aesthetics like this are really the job of the mapper.

eg. You can fake a light reflecting off water surfaces by using a smaller light near the point where the water would reflect the light to.

Any translucent material with parallel, straight borders - as it is the case in sauerbraten - does not refract enough to notice. Given that it's not too thick and you can't go inside it.

So adding refraction to materials in sauerbraten would make no sense.

I would agree about keeping only one kind of glass and adding it refraction.
That would look fine, but i doubt some maps' authors didn\'t though about that point of view.

What about a command line into the CFG to able/disable the refraction ?

As I said, when looking through a glass pane, you won't notice any refraction. There is only refraction when the glass is not straight and/or the borders are not parallel. Both is not (yet?) possible in sauerbraten.

So, adding refraction would not make any sense.

Right... Sauer only does flat glass, unfortunately. You'll have to play with the shaders.

In sauer you have allready refraction on water so why cant you put refraction on glass ?

Why would you? Glassplanes normally don't show much refraction unless it is curved like a lens for example.

Different colors of glass and Opacity on the other hand would be sweet.

Right. As stated before, when you have a flat piece of glass, the refraction is minute. Why do you think people use glass in windows? Because it's the closest thing we have to something not being there visually, but being there physically. (Unfortunately, we can't place clip in real life.)

As for colors and opacity, I agree. The material system, if expanded, could be awesome.

no. materials in sauerbraten are pure cubes.
But look at "skycastle" .. you can "fake it" ;)

Nope. :( Glass and water cannot be "shaped" in the way cubes can.

If you make a glass - like texture with the proper shader, you can fake it, but it isn't transparent. Just enter this line above the materials you want to try it with in the map's config file:

setshader bumpenvspecmapparallaxworld

Also, having part of the spec map all white and using an envmap entity will give you pretty decent fake mirror.
