dots with ati radeon

by sinsky on 07/10/2007 16:56, 25 messages, last message: 07/13/2007 15:36, 8193 views, last view: 05/05/2024 04:39

I've posted this before but got no reply. As there is talk of implementing high-level math tests for new threads I decided to hurry up. Now that I managed to post this I need a few replies in the thread to indicate conflict and attract attention :)

Of course this thread needs a subject since otherwise it'll get erased too quickly, and here it is - both in Cube and Sauer I get some nasty dots. Screenshot:

Maybe there's a simple solution but it just evades me. The problem is probably linked to ati drivers (Windows; Ati Radeon 9550, also seen it on my old 7500 with Cube).

Some things you might try:

/ati_skybox_bug 1
/sparklyfix 1
/loadsky skyboxes/black

The latter is only really useful on indoor maps where a lighter sky shows through the geometry gaps alot more, a black (or dark) skybox helps there.

I personally own a 9550 myself, what a dope I was.

You know, I assumed that it was the anti-aliasing, but it could just be that it is an nVidia card. The dots do show up on my Mobility Radeon 9600 though. I dare not test FSAA on that card, though...

Only dots on the sky go away with ati_skybox_bug. I didn't know about sparklyfix and just tried it but it doesn't have any effect here. loadsky skyboxes/black is most helpful - it vanishes most dots and the ones that remain are not so bright but the skybox is gone..

I get barely any dots on:

nVidia GeForce 4 MX (32mb) AGP

I get no dots on:

nVidia GeForce FX5200 (128MB) PCI

none on:

nVidia GeForce 7300GS (128MB) PCI-E

none on:

ATI Radeon X1600 (128MB) PCI-E

Lots on (including glitches on Urban_C:

ATI Radeon X300SE (128MB) PCI-E

I get none with:

2x nVidia GeForce 7600GT (256MB) PCI-E (Alternate Frame Rendering, SLi)

And also none with:

nVidia GeForce 7600GT (256MB) PCI-E

Both using antialiasing of one sort or another.

I get occasional dots with an 8800GTS, had no such problems with a 7800GT, severe dots everywhere with a Radeon 9600XT.

I have the same video card (GeForce 7600 GT 256MB) and don't see any dots. I don't have antialiasing, either.

My last video card, an ATI Radeon 9250, did have white dots.

Yeah, sparklyfix never changed anything for me either, curious. And yes, the loadsky one is only useful on indoor maps where you have little to no contact with large portions of the sky :P

I don't usually mock these math problems, but 1 + 1 = [ ] ? Geez.

I always get hard stuff like 5 * 5 etc. There's absolutely no way to calculate that, even when helping with feet fingers. Totally unfair :/

There was actually a bug in sparklyfix that caused it not to work at all on maps that used it. This got fixed in CVS recently. Though, even then, not all maps use it, but for the many that were, it wasn't working properly.

You are one of the few.

You think you have some authority around here?

News, buddy: You don't.

Stop complaining about the forum.

Why don't you just go make some little phpbb2 forum for cube and sauer.

Answer: Because no one will come.

This kind of attitude isn't necessary, there are better ways to say no, and it really isn't useful flaming a troll, you're just giving him what he wants.

For the record, the system is the way it is so you don't have to create "yet another forum account for which you need to remember a username and password".

Something I personally hate about most forum software.

Stop using norton or tell it to leave your cookies alone.

Failure to configure your software properly is not equivalent to poor design on others' parts.

You could make it so that you could choose a password to retrieve your cookie again. But then it should be an option for those who want. It could be used for some occasions when your at another computer, when you don\'t want to log in to your email to get the cookie.
And in any case I think there should be a log out button, that removes your cookie, so you don\'t have to do it manually.

Just ideas though...

Anyhow, about dots.. I had anti-aliasing disabled today and I got severe dots appearing while playing Sauerbraten. With 4xAA it seems most go away.. just strange because I've got a decent Nvidia card, the least likely of which to cause problems.

STOP IT! YOU'RE TEARING THIS FAMILY APART!!

Also: ATI AIW9600 = many dots. Can't fix with any known combination of settings.I have to take all my screenies at ultra-high res and shrink them to remove dots.
