Linux server primer/toaster?

by Visual Echo on 06/29/2007 22:29, 5 messages, last message: 06/30/2007 17:56, 1085 views, last view: 05/01/2024 22:55

Hi! I just recently discovered AssaultCube / Cube Engine / Sauerbraten . I have a colo-box running linux that I could host a server on.

Where might I find a server primer, or is there someone who can help me with questions about how to get one up and running?

Forgive me for the noobish first post, I'm still at my day job and haven't had time to do any heavy searches, but then if someone has a nice "how to" page for server set up, that would help a lot.

Any / all assistance is appreciated. At one time I ran a 32 slot Tribes2 server (Ann Arbor Tribes2 Server) and over it's 4 year life, logged over 6 million kills via database, fully searchable by player name along with all the other associated stats. I would be interested in programming an add-on statistics package for the Cube Engine (or other related) if I can get a little help getting started.

Scroll down to "Server Hosting" but it has some outdated information which I can't edit because the Wiki only allows certain people to edit it.

It says 4 players is the default slot amount but that's now 6 due to some magical change in the networking code.

#define DEFAULTCLIENTS 6

Why exactly would that be 'magical'?

I'm finding out the fastest way to learn about this game is from the source code, the docs are pretty thin right now.

I was referring to some change in the network code making 6 players use the same amount of bandwidth as 4 players used to.

The README.html files seems to cover a lot of information. What is so thin about it? Is it lacking something in particular?
