by PlatinumArts on 06/28/2007 13:02, 13 messages, last message: 07/19/2007 17:12, 2423 views, last view: 04/13/2024 08:50

Over at http://Kids.PlatinumArts.Net Platinum Arts Sandbox Beta 1.0 has been released! Platinum Arts Sandbox is Educational Software that enables kids to design their own 3D worlds quickly and easily. The main mission of the project will be to add more features and ways for the children to add their own custom content and to make it as easy as possible for them to do so. Also Platinum Arts will be providing custom content such as mazes, playgrounds, forts, jumping levels, forests and natural terrains to explore, etc.

The project is to remain open source and free so that developers and kids can help add new content and features to help make Platinum Arts Sandbox the most fun and easy world creation tool possible. Platinum Arts Sandbox will be easy enough for kids to use but also powerful enough for full game projects.

Main Feature List:
- The ability to map edit in game in real time and cooperatively with other people.
- The ability to immediately play with and interact with map editing changes
- Several custom maps that will feature slides, jumping levels, mazes, amusement park rides, etc
- The pursuit of making it as easy as possible to add map features and content. Also the addition of new entities to add even more features and capabilities.

For the current features being worked on please check the forums at http://kids.PlatinumArts.Net

Upcoming Features, a list I hope and want to have in:
- A tutorial video
- Audio tutorials
- Vehicles
- New models
- A way to scroll through the models much like how you can already scroll through the textures and easily add new models such as trees, plants, and other objects
- New maps
- New entities. I really want to create a "move" entity so players can make moveable platforms, rollercoasters, etc.
- Working water needs to be added.
- Any other features I can think of to make the creation process as easy as possible.

Any new members and/or contributors would be more than welcome! Please sign up in the forum!

I want to give a big thanks to Wouter van Oortmerssen who is the creator of the Cube 2 engine which powers Platinum Arts Sandbox. Also a big thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Cube 2 project and made it the great engine that it is. Take care and enjoy the program. Please let me know what you think!

LOL, i tried to make a g-rated mod for sauerbraten and it was the funnies thing ever. I replaces the explosion textures with flowers and ever player was a colorful beachball. It also played the seasame street song in the background. It was really fun until it didnt work on my new compueter.

All in all it took me about an hour to make, no script changes all just content plugins. Online is just so much more rewarding when played to kiddy music and shooting at big beachballs with flower explosions.

Err

- The pursuit of making it as easy as possible to add map features and content. Also the addition of new entities to add even more features and capabilities."

Those are all Sauerbraten features mate :)

Also, can't find a download link on the site.. so I'll reserve my judgment for the moment.

It is o.k., but a few issues I found, at least in version 1.1, there is no sound, and you included a lot of useless coding in your game. /getmap and /sendmap still work, but there is no multi-player. Particles have been removed, but the entity can still be created, that aside the only other bad thing is the ominous teleporter, spikes are scary, even to a player like me.

Besides that the textures you added are nice, and the game provides a great deal of freedom, similar to sauerbraten, but there is no way to change the map size, hehe.

I found a funny little bug. I wanted to be a little .. what should I call it .. experimental, so I entered "/newent monster 3"... and actually, when saving the map and then opening it in SP mode (hehe), I was hurt by some strange non-visible ghost ? :P

Seriously, you should remove the monsters if you want this to be a child game. Or, make the monsters into nice people running around and doing nothing. :)

Wow. I died in a game for kids.

#7: Folfo

There was a character (I think his name was folfo or something) on a foreign TV show, and recently he had to be taken of the air for normal reasons.

So, to explain to the children that he was no longer there, usually one would have the character move to florida or somewhere nice.

But.

They killed Folfo by beating him with a bat on TV, as the kids watched.

I think that kids can handle dying in a video game :P

Thanks so much for all of your feedback guys! As a note it still is in beta so there are still a lot of changes to be made. The next release will feature some new levels for kids to explore and interact with. Thanks for letting me know about the invisible monsters! I'll be sure to take that out though I was also thinking of using the ai to help create wildlife. rc the one I was wondering what you meant by that I included a lot of useless coding. What stuff was useless? I'd definitely like to remove anything that is useless and clean it up. If anyone has any features they'd like to suggest I'm very open to suggestions! Oh and there definitely is sound. Take care and thanks for your feedback!

IF you create your "move" entity i will be very impressed. Although the best method i can see involves the creation of entire seperate window using a node system for platform prefrances and then a seperate main window view to script the path dynamicaly i would be thrilled if you could come up with something alot easier.

If you do manage to make this, please also consider rotating platforms and "looping" platforms that keep repeating. Also please consider being able to apply this effect to ALL materials, not just bricks. This would create water currents and wind if done correctly.

#11: coop

by Osbios on 07/08/2007 00:52

If I look at the main feature list I see the coop maping part. If you realy want to make somethink powerfull then you could try to solve some of sauerbratens current problems:

-slow recalculating of changed geometrie (Big maps make the editing extremly slow)

-right management for map segments (Im shure you know the troll problem on the coop servers)

Thanks for all of the support. I have been moving a little slow due to outside commitments but I'm hoping to get back in gear soon. I don't think the next release will have anything fancy and will be mostly featuring a new map or two and the map models. Conceptually I'm trying to narrow down exactly what I want out of the game. I think what I'll be doing is making games based off of it and that is where the heavy map content will be, whereas Sandbox will be the base platform. I really appreciate your feedback and ideas for what to include. Keep em coming! Take care.

I really like that idea of having "move" entities. I wish Sauerbraten had that feature.
