not-so-obvious cheaters

by salt on 06/16/2007 13:47, 4 messages, last message: 06/18/2007 21:05, 1109 views, last view: 04/25/2024 04:43

i've monitored a certain player over the past week in various games on sauerbraten, as i believed they were cheating. the problem is however, their cheating is not so obvious. they have an overpowered shotgun, but the rate of fire is the same, and they seem to have no other advantages over other players.

the trouble is, this person does not get banned, because their cheating is not obvious. people do not like to cry "CHEAT!" just because they keep getting fragged by a certain player.

but with certainty, i can say that this player is using a modified shotgun to their advantage. in the last game i played, i asked if anyone had noticed (but did not mention the player's name). one person said they had, and said which player it was.

the trouble is, the not-so-obvious cheaters do not get kicked, and players are afraid to accuse people of cheating unless it's really obvious.

and i know that people reading this will think "he's just sour that he can't play very well". this is not the case, and i can say i am not the only one that has noticed this happening.

i'm not going to mention the name of the player that has this modified shotgun (chances are if they read this, they'll change the name anyway), but i'd be interested to know if anyone on here has noticed it.

i would also be interested to hear what people think could be done about not-so-obvious cheating.

Close shots with the shotgun can seem overpowered. I'd be reluctant to think that all someone would do is change the damage for one gun, but it might happen. Just take master and ban them if you are sure they're cheating.

But make absolutely sure first. Banning someone 'cause they own you is no fun.

yeah, i first considered close shots, but the gun is more powerful than a close shot even when fired from a distance.

regarding your comment "I'd be reluctant to think that all someone would do is change the damage for one gun", this is what i said peoples' attitudes would be in my first post.

a player that is invincible, has a super-fast rate of fire, and unlimited ammo can easily be seen as a cheater and will be banned quickly. however, if a person changes only one thing, ie ups the damage on a weapon, it makes the cheating much less obvious, and so they are much less likely to get kicked/banned.

the reason for this is that players do not like to consider others as cheaters. you said in your own post, "Banning someone 'cause they own you is no fun". this is the attitude that allows the not-so-obvious cheaters get away with it. everyone gives the benefit of the doubt, and accepts them as a very good player, because no-one wants to be seen as a sore loser, or shout wolf.

regarding your comment about taking master and banning them. if i was master, and banned them, other players would complain and accuse me of being sore that another player is better than me. if i wasn't master, then it is highly unlikely they would get kicked, due to the attitudes i have already dicussed.

#4: Quads

Certainly check if damage is over 200, but remember that quads can push damage up to 800 up close. If the map is quad-free, of else the damage isn't divisable by 40 (and is >200), you do indeed have your proof.
