Aard offered us to use this forum for the assaultcube stuff, this makes sense as both the cube and ac communities are small. I hope it turns out well.

#36: Computer Shutdown

by Junkbone on 08/08/2007 21:29

I've got a bit of an issue with AC too -
my computer has turned off without warning 4 times while playing. I have seen this problem zero times when AC is not running.
Any ideas on what could be causing it?

Overheating? Do you know the temperature of your compute when it shut off?

I don't know the temperature of the computer; the only thing I know is that it happens intermittently when playing AC. I suppose if AC were processor intensive, it could cause the computer to overheat, but AC is supposed to have relatively low requirements.

My computer info (which I should have included to start with):
Thinkpad T60
WinXP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2
2GHz processor
1 GB RAM

Battery:
Panasonic Li-ion battery from 2006,
not affected by recalls,
currently reading as Good condition and 37 degrees C (which is rather warm...),

Notebook = Not good for gaming

Make sure that the fan is running.

Make sure that you aren't clogging up the air intakes by... I dunno, running it on a couch or carpet, or on your lap.

Make sure that you aren't playing it outside or somewhere where it's warm and humid.

Because it's definitely overheating.

It's amazing what a simple sheet of metal can do for a laptop, isn't it? My old roommate used to have a hideous piece of stainless steel he kept on his lap when he was gaming on his laptop (but he was able to play WoW in 1600x1200 with full effects and minimal fog, that rich son-of-a-gun).

Well, I still don't get why it should only overheat while playing AC, but I appreciate all your help.

Acord: I run sauerbraten on my notebook (slower than his) and get 250FPS :)

Well, it is overclocked...

(Memory Clock at 704MHz!)

Oh, and my friend has his 7300GS running at 640MHz, which is around the speed of an 8800GTS :D

It hasn't exploded yet!

Right, but better hardware usually creates more heat and needs more cooling. This ain't always possible on a laptop, and a lot of times people will put it on their bed, carpet, couch, lap, or whatever and block the intake vents. Common mistake.

"Oh, and my friend has his 7300GS running at 640MHz, which is around the speed of an 8800GTS :D"

Uhh.. not quite. Much like CPUs, the memory speed and core speed mean little unless you're comparing two cards with the same chipset. The 7300GS is old and slower than a 6600, let alone an 8800GTS ;)

Oops.. the 7300GS isn't old per-se, it was just a budget card upon release.
