Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

That imfamous invisable walls/video card question...

by Coopersville on 04/30/2007 08:16, 15 messages, last message: 05/09/2007 12:40, 1344 views, last view: 04/22/2024 20:24

Cube runs great for me in every way, except for that one problem where my shots seem to stop, hitting some form of invisable barrier. I've searched the entire forum and FAQ to see if there was any sort of fix to this at all, and have found nothing useful.

Is there seriously no hope for me? Is there actually no work-around at all?

Specs:

Microsoft Windows XP Pro
P3 1.0ghz
800mb RAM
ATI 128 GL

More detailed information on your graphics card? Driver version would be helpful as well.

Oops, that's what I get for posting just before I fall asleep.

It's the ATI RAGE Fury, and I have its newest, and last drivers. I really don't know what detailed information I can drop on you, I'm pretty sure this would cover anything:

Actually, to make things crystal clear, it's the ATI RAGE Fury 128 GL, not 128 VR.

Allrighty, if you're talking about Sauerbraten (which I will assume you are) your card is way too old.

If you really want to get it working however, you could try using older ATI drivers. The latest ATI drivers usually show a performance decrease and more bugs appear on older cards (and ATI don't actually make drivers for your card anymore).

this is an old cube1 problem he's mentioning...I recall the problem, but cannot remember what the fix is. There IS a fix for this....somewhere. Surely someone around here remembers this issue.

Yes, this is definitely a Cube 1 issue, and if anyone can provide me with that solution (assuming it actually exists), it would be very appreciated.

From the Cube readme:

Cube runs, but I can't shoot anything / rockets blow up in my face!

Cube uses OpenGL to find out what position in the 3d world the crosshair is pointing at. If you have old/buggy drivers, or drivers for a badly supported card, it may be that this feature is broken. Your only solution is to install better/newer drivers, or failing that, buy a new card.

Or maybe, some people don't need the latest wizbang graphics cards? Not everyone plays games you know, and a card like that is more than suitable for office applications etc.

Yeah, I'm wasn't trying to build a high-end rig when I got this PC, and I didn't really want a video card bigger than 64MB, but my friend happened to have a 128 lying around, so I took this.

I wasn't ever expecting to play any games beyond the realm of Quake III, Warcraft 3, or Purge.

Well, I know theres a fix for this problem. Yes thats an old card/chip, but your invisible wall problem was something fixable....it might be as simple as changing drivers. Are you certain you have the newest drivers for this card?

I'm 100% sure, it was stated on ATi's website that it was the last update when I went to download the drivers. That, and I reseched my card fairly well, since I had never heard of it until my buddy installed it for me.

And I'm certainly not going to try installing older drivers. I'm pretty sure ATi didn't change anything that would have 'ruined' how it normally maps architecture in OpenGL. If that's the only advice I can get on the offical message board and FAQ, then I suppose there is no hope.

In other news, I was able to play Sauerbraten on my friend's PC today. It's a very beautiful sequel for the Cube engine, and I'd like to maybe try editing it someday, whenever I get my own hands on a pimped-out gaming rig.

Catalyst -> 3D -> More Settings -> [ ] Force 24-bit Z-buffer depth

.. or ..

cube.bat -zX, where X is the bit-depth

See if any of that works for you, isn't a definitive list of stuff, just based on information I've read over time.
