Sauerbraten demonstrational media?

by Drakas on 04/17/2007 17:20, 13 messages, last message: 04/18/2007 20:49, 1375 views, last view: 04/27/2024 14:34

Hello everyone,

I had spent some time coming up with a simple demonstration of Sauerbraten's new features - http://woop.wemew.com/Sauerbraten_demonstration_video (yes, there are some bugs/inconsistencies, 'cause I am a newbie in this). If anybody is interested, I could upload a higher resolution video too.

Now my suggestion here is that if anybody has time, it would be nice if people created their own videos. I especially prefer watching Capture games, which would be amazing. Using Quin's SauerMod, you can easily follow people and with MeatROme's ChaseCam, you can watch them play in first person. So if anyone is not too lazy, take a bit of time makign up your own video. It'd be nice if a video was released under a creativecommons license or anything else that is open.

For Windows users, I suggest using ZD Soft Game recorder, and for UNIX users - SEOM+Yukon screen capture software. Free editing software is available, and it is called Cinelerra (choose the community version).

If you create anything, you can either send it to me (I can put it up for you on YouTube/Google Video), or publish it yourself and send a link, it will be appreciated.

For my mix, the credits and software are at the end of the video. Err, I forgot to include the usage of mencoder for converting the video to suitable formats for uploading.

The basic idea is to enlarge the community by spreading the word by using video sharing sites and other ways, that attract people's attention.

Thanks!

I am really calling for new media, not the old :-) I've already seen these and do not find them to be very self-advertising :). I also would liek to see some live action, like people playing Capture cooperatively. Thanks.

In my opinion, the trouble with such videos is you need screen capturing software and other programs and this makes it hard to achieve smooth and good-looking results as if you were playing for real. And with bad results you could drive as many people away as the number that get interested. Screenshots are safer.. perhaps you need a beautiful screenshot on the same page that would help hold people until the movie is over :)

Off-topic - I'd be happy to see an in-game movie player for raytraced animations. When I saw the latest spring sauer and checked out sauermod I thought of making a side-scrolling game with lots of silly animations between levels. But there's neither support nor time for this, and sourceforge will surely be happy to host all of my animations just because the source of the stuff I used is open..

Screenshots are dead, there is no action. Now you start about the lack of software, and I say that there is no lack from my PoV. Smooth movement - set maxroll to 0; Also if you are in SP, you can change gamespeed to allow smoother movement..

But when you put the movie online you have to reduce the quality. I'm not saying it's not possible to record a low-quality movie that shows the true game experience, but.. it's got to be some work of art :)

Videos might be a good way to show people how to do stuff with sauerbraten.

Like heightmaps, map-cfg stuff etc.

Those wouldn't require to be smooth as much as when trying to capture the feeling of playing the game, just informative ;)
