Kinds of mappers

by KoiKitsune2006 on 03/13/2007 02:43, 11 messages, last message: 03/14/2007 05:55, 1081 views, last view: 04/29/2024 08:18

Me and Mors was talking about Mappers and how everybody wants a specific standard for most maps. Even if your just getting the hang of it. This is an IM conversation and I thought it was funny. We were talking about maps like SkyCastle.

[21:36] Koi Kitsune: People in the cube community are spoiled by those kinds of maps. Now they expect every mapper to do what that map glistens.

[21:37] Mors: yeah
[21:37] Koi Kitsune: I'm not going to do that. That is way too extreme

[21:37] Koi Kitsune: There are 3 kinds of mappers

[21:37] Koi Kitsune: 1) People who make maps and make it fucking suck

[21:37] Mors.: me you and no-body else

[21:37] Mors.: lol
[21:37] Mors.: i'm guilty for 1

[21:37] Mors.: lol

[21:38] Koi Kitsune: 2) People who makes maps so they can have fun in them, build them for gameplay, but put "enough" detail in the map for certain standards

[21:38] Koi Kitsune: 3) People who live off of making maps, goes fucking nuts, has bloodshot eyes 24 o' 7, and builds maps beyond human understanding

[21:39] Mors.: lmfao

[21:39] Mors.: i'm number 1 i think :P

[21:39] Koi Kitsune: I'm number 2

There's only two kinds of mappers. Those who take pride in their work, and those who don't. A map takes days. A good map takes weeks. A great map takes months.

Amen to that.

And it also (also as shadow said) ultimately comes down to YOUR mapping skill. Of course, not all of us can compare to kurtis (for example), even if we spend 15 years on a map, but you can tell the difference between a map worked on a lot by a crappy mapper and a map barely worked on at all by a fantastic mapper.

Didn't you mean there are 10 types of mappers (half of them understand binary, the rest don't).

Seriously though, I view it as mappers falling into categories according to their goals. Thus the same person can be a variety of "types" over the course of a single year. These categories include basic premises like originality-oriented, gameplay-oriented, and limit pushing oriented. We've certainly got all three present in the community.

And besides, Skycastle is my favorite map in Sauer. I was also telling Mors that making a map like that has to take forever since, when you're aiming for something you go hard on it. Like how I felt bad that I was away for along time. I just made 3 maps in so many hours that I spent.

And as for Kurtis, I have to say that I respect his skills and was only making a joke. As for everyone who maps.

when I started making maps for quake1 it would almost be a requirement that I spend a month making a map, and still takes a long time to get something of quality out, but there are shortcuts you can give yourself. I am new to sauer so I dont know if you can make 'prefabs' or not, but that would be a good idea.

(prefab. verb. A something you made in the past, and saved it for use in maps in the future. Example - A cool doorway or a window.)

also, a good mapper plays alot of maps other people make and gets design ideas from, however a great mapper (few) can make themes instead of taking other peoples and changing them.

Being an ex-mapper for the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 community (2D platformer with online DM/CTF play), I can totally understand Koi Kitsune's (Fish Fox?) point. I wasn't the best mapper in Jazz 2, but I had a reputation of sorts, and knew the ins and outs of the editing program, and I always put plenty of time in mapmaking. The single greatest asset you could ever put into making a map is time, no matter your skill level or the game engine.

I try start with visual quality, but always thinking of gameplay. I've done it this way since doom1. I also never plan a map out. Over the years of community map sharing, I've become comfortable knowing that I cannot please everyone. Some say my maps need more, some say they are too much, etc, etc. I'm sure theres a few ( or more ) of you that hate my maps...that doesn't bother me at all...feel free to bash me :)

I never bash anyone's maps because I have respect for every mapper. :p Because I know the time and energy you have to put into making a map. But you know, a little light hearted poke now and then is good for me. ^^
