What application do I need in order to edit and compile the source for either Cube or Sauerbraten?

A little, but I can at least modify some aspects of the game such as built-in strings and things like that.
I downloaded a kit with alot of binaries and libraries, but I dunno how to use them.
I have earlier experience of BASIC programming, and a little C++.

i started out being fluent in VB6... when i started with Sauer a few months back, i didn't know any C++ at all...
Just look through the code, find some examples, and you'll learn...
The biggest part of programming with sauer, is becoming familiar with every aspect of its insides.

Yeah, but how do I even reach the code and compiling stuff? I don't know how to use the executables I got from the d/l!

You can also use a simple text-editor to read/manipulate the sourcefiles. If one doesn't intend to really develop stuff for the game I think that's the easier way.
