Hey I\'ve been doing some heavy brainstorming and concept work on a multiplayer DM/TDM/CTF game which would be a fast paced, yet more tactical game something like Half Life/Goldeneye 64 but on large open island levels like Farcry. Most of the concept is fully documented and artwork is in the works for now I\'m setting up a portfolio type webpage to showcase it. The Cube 2/Sauerbraten engine and map editor are obviously perfect for this idea but it seems like a lot of changes would need to be made to the game as is to include a lot of necessary futures. If adding things like crouching, weapon zooms, reloading, leaning, CTF gametype and more complicated menus would be possible let me know, and also if the general idea of interests anyone please respond. This weekend I\'m away from home but shorty far more in depth concept will be available.

Not lie about your email :P
Nah seriously, if you don't have a cookie on your first visit to the site then it'll give you an option to retrieve one. I've done it many times.

Yeah dont even try to make far cry let alone crysis in this game. You will spend a month on just 10 feet of beach.

I know that I'm not the best mapper here, the fastest for sure, but 10 feet of beach with lighting and objects could take me a max of about 3 minutes

Speed and quality are two different things.
I can make a plot of sand in 3 minutes too, that doesn't mean it will look like Crysis.

What the hell are you comparing sauerbraten to crysis for anyway? One is freeware, the other is a commercial-funded corporation...and besides that, you CAN create nice smooth lighting across a wavy, high-poly beach terrain, in just a few minutes. TRY THIS: Just make some uneven cubes at a large grid, select them at a SMALL grid, hit the H key once, and watch what happens. If thats not smooth enough for you, before you deselect the terrain, type smoothmap at the console...presto, you have nice smooth terrain. Now, to be sure the lighting is smooth over this terrain, type lerpangle 66 ( you can try othervalues if you see the need ) at the console before you compile the lights.

Also, while you have this terrain selected, after hitting the H key, you can alter the wavyness of the selection area by holding J key and scrolling the mouse. This feature usually requires to be followed by the smoothmap console command, or you'll end up with pointy cubes.

Can only hope that wasn't intended for me. I don't expect anything from Sauerbraten, much less would I expect it to be anywhere near Crysis.
Most of the limitations of Sauerbraten are there BECAUSE of the intentions laid out by the design. People who want more complex geometry detail are better off using engines that cater to that. Sauerbraten is strength in simplicity.
My only point was that just because he spends "3 minutes max" making a beach doesn't mean it looks good.

Im not saying this game is crysis just that it is impossible to create a map that even looks nearly as good as it does on far cry let alone crysis.
I can make a beach in 5 secs but it looks crap. Cubes are too limiting for natural stuff. They are great for anything man made. I just dont see the point of trying to make a island in this game when all you will get is a blocky piece of shit.
Dont try to make other games with sauerbraten because it will only end in frustration. I could spend a hour making a good looking cave in this or i could do it with one click in crysis and the cave will look alot better than the cave i spent so much time on.
You can make older natural maps from 2000 or earlier, but after that, natural maps just become to complex for this game. Even in battlefield 1942 which is 6 years old the maps are impossible to make well with this.
And i know all the smoothmap and hightmaps shit but you can tell the difference in just one glance at another game.

In BF 1942 you can't make caves and stuff like that but only make the ground higher and lower.

lerpangle is the angle the lighting calculation will blend over. It can make a curve actually look like a curve. Similar to phong shading in the way it ends up looking...very nice for terrain stuff, or curvy maps of any kind really.

I am a pretty bug Goldeneye fan.
This is the longest I have worked on a single map:

It's not... good, at all, but I thought it might be useful as a reference point :)
