Easy Mod

by Geartrooper on 02/25/2007 07:08, 22 messages, last message: 03/05/2007 18:48, 4791 views, last view: 05/01/2024 12:38

Here\'s an idea I\'ve been fishing around with. What sort of mod would be fun, easy to do art, and easy to code for?

Dog fighting. Biplanes, jets, balloons, toy airplanes... you get the idea. A lot of current maps could be used. Animation would be minimal. But I bet it would be fun. Of course I would supply some animated models if anyone is interested. Rally cars are even more interesting but the coding from what I\'ve heard would be messy.

So far we have a Mapper and a Modeler/Animator. And some dude that likes carts. :P

I'd be more than happy to open up sauermod as a community project and offer my services, so long as the main point of it stays valid: minimal core engine changes, fully compatible fpsgame

I've been toying with the idea of making other games, but I have so far been focusing on the fps bots.

Thank you all for your kind offers. I accept.

Here are the groundlines for the Mod;

Community Based
Minimal Programming Changes

After a name for the mod is decided we can meet on an irc channel and discuss finer points.

Meanwhile I'll begin sketches for planes and hope others will do so as well. The final decisions will be voted on as a group with contributors receiving a voice.

My own personal condition is that we keep making the Mod as much fun as it will be playing it and respect one another's ideas and efforts.

Why are you still reading this? Go! Get busy! :)

First vote will be on the Mod's name.

So far I've come up with, (drumroll)

Aero Tilt!

i vote that we do exactly the opposite of what gear suggested. the name of the game can be dependent on the theme. Once we know what kind of planes and gameplay we have then we should think of a name.

i was wondering what type of theme we would have. futuristic planes? older planes? if we do older take a look at crimson skies. that game had awesome planes. if futuristic then take a look at the falken from ace combat 5 lol.

i cannot draw but once you have drawings i should be able to model them. i got bored and made a plane roughly based on an extra 300L http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/HIethan592/300Salmostdone.jpg

Until another name is decided upon or until it is voted in, the irc.quakenet.org channel for this mod is at #aero_tilt. Everyone is welcome.

I hate to like.. burst our collective bubbles.. but this is going to take more than a 'quick code change' :( no coder can just pull flight sim physics out from his ass.

But yeah I'm happy to help anyway, I need someone to give me deadlines for things or I'm never going to release another map at this rate..

flight sim physics are not that complex. the hardest part is balancing realism and gameplay.

If you go for the bubble thing, you can use Orb media (and everything) if it fits your project. I've thought about doing remake of Orb with Sauer but I'm just to lazy and lack some very basic programming skill. But looking at those grenades.. maybe making rolling objects isn't so hard, in Cube you had to code the physics if you wanted that but now it's part of the engine. Anyway, best of luck guys.

#16: controls

by mI@school on 02/28/2007 18:15

This sounds like a fantastic idea for a mod. I've always loved dogfighting and will be looking forward to this. Hopefully it'll get off the ground. (no pun intended, heh)

And I have a suggestion for the controls. You don't have to take it seriously though, just a thought. You could give the aircraft a Descent-style control scheme. Where W would move forward, S back, A and D strafe, and the mouse to look around. Q and E could rotate on the Z axis. When you weren't moving the aircraft would hover. Although, with airplanes, you can't hover and maintain realism; thats the problem. It would have to be set in space or something :/. The only reason I suggest this is because Descent had a control scheme that worked perfectly for a KB/mouse combo and didn't require a joystick.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. We are working on controls quite similiar to that, actually.

Flight sim physics are incredibly complex if you want realism. You have to create a program that would take the planes design and then calculate the physics and wind effects on it while it is flying. Then there are many other factors like weight changes, wind, air resistance at different hights, and a huge amount of other shit. This is why one game X-Plane is over 60g. About 5g of that is all for the plane physics calculations.

If you just want planes that fly like most other games then they are easy.

actually a minimal instal is about a gig. incredibly realistic flight physics is challenging, but you miss the point. for what we are doing it can be very simple. id love to get into a debate on this but its off topic so im not going to
