I can't seem the get the ~ key to bring up the command line. Am i being stupid? My ~ key is on the # key just left of the enter button. All help appreciated. Isnt there another way to bring the commend line up? thanks

You must mean the console....just press 't' then type '/' that's all the tilde really does anyway.
please anyone correct me if i'm wrong?

absolutely right.
I usually bind my caret-key to open the console, since backquote is ungainly for my layout too.
to do this too put following line into your autoexec.cfg (create if not already done to contain your name setting):
bind CARET [saycommand /]

You can type things is by pressing "T"
after you hit return or enter, your message will show up in green

On a french keyboard, there is the "T" touch and the "²" touch which works.
