Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

why ATi sucks and I wasted my money.

by GNU Jeffz on 01/19/2007 04:42, 43 messages, last message: 02/13/2007 01:48, 6042 views, last view: 05/04/2024 05:13

I enjoy playing sauerbraten fairly often and cube not as often. I use GNU/Linux and not Windows. I have had the same machine with an ATi 9800 PRO 128MB since mid 2003 and it has served me well, just about every map except for Thor is enjoyable to play.

Recently I considered purchasing a new beast but decided that perhaps just a video card and some more memory would suffice for playing sauerbraten.

So looking at my alternatives for AGP (no PCIe) and at that time thinking \"Yeah, ATi have been pretty good to me with the 9800 pro I have\", I decided to go with another ATi card.

I found the HIS IceQ X1650 Pro 256MB, r535 vs r350, three years inbetween and it appeared to be the newest AGP card, I thought \"hmm ok, there should be a moderate improvement\". After I install it and the latest drivers from ATi\'s website, to my disappointment the new card ran about at about 50% of the 9800 pro!

Wonderful, what a piece of shit.

So, let me get this straight, in 3 years from now, ATi will release a card that performs worse than their current range?

oh ok I see, I will keep that in mind.

Thank you ATi.

Well.. I'm sitting here on my ATI PC, quite perplexed. It seems that the Radeon 9250 (and any cards not based on the X800 board or higher) have no way of monitoring their temperature. Can't get AoE III running without it freezing two minutes after loading, then requiring a reset.

Probably a driver thing, possibly an overheating problem. The card is amazingly sucky anyway, lags like hell in ANY post 2002 game, yet I paid $100 for it a year ago.. anyway can't wait to shut this PC down and go back to my precious 7800GT :(

I'll post with results on how Sauerbraten runs on this card, and if it shuts down two minutes into the game :(

um. I could have told you that without you testing. 9250 is way lower spec than my 9800 pro.

You can't be serious. I got my 9550 not long ago for less than $80, before that I had 7500 which worked for YEARS on all kinds of games, including some heavy stuff such as Lineage 2. The only serious problem I got with it got fixed with something as simple as removing and reinserting it into the socket. When I was changing cards, the guy at the shop looked at me with disrespect, removed the fan cover (or whatever it's called), went out and shaked some dust (from the old one of course; it still works btw). So, apparently, it doesn't matter if you take care of your ati card or not, if you love it or hate it, etc. - it just works :) That's the only type of card that can survive on my pc!

Btw I intend to destroy my brain with stereo glasses in the near future. Anaglyphic (used in movie theatres) are cheap and best for me but I can't find any locally. Also ati drivers' support for these is bad (actually missing, or so I hear) but some games and apps have it built-in. I hope I'll get my hands on that stuff soon :)

Strange, I run an ATI x700 Pro 256 MB AGP, 1.8 ghz AMD Athlon 2200+ XP, and about 768 MB of RAM, yet on every map I get well over 120 FPS at all times. No idea why you guys get such bad rates.

ATI cards are just all over the place.

Although admittedly sinsky, my laptop's Radeon 7500 has been good to me, it works perfectly, never has a problem (in fact its overclocked :)

Heaventorn, you seem to have missed one crucial piece of information,

_____ARE YOU USING THE PROPRIETARY LINUX DRIVERS_____

Everyone know the best graphic card provider for GNU/Linux is nVidia.

ATI doesn't work really good in Linux... i know the reason but i don't know how to explain it in English >_<

Max_ofS2D, nVidia may offer the best performance but it does not offer something else which is important, freedom (like Intel does with its drivers).

In the case of ATi, I believe the word is 'incompetence'.

... ATi sucks anyways, even the proprietary drivers.

The proprietary drivers in Linux _do_ work, but only partially, and not well with Sauerbraten, unless you've got a really new card. Aaaaand, if you've got a new card, ATi cards have been known to randomly hard-lock my system...

engigma, They work just fine with old cards, new cards appear to perform worse.
