by sasser on 01/13/2007 23:49, 18 messages, last message: 01/29/2007 14:04, 1415 views, last view: 04/30/2024 08:22

i build a nice map and want to play it with others. the problem is that i have to change always from coopedit 2 play because noone has got the map.
I would like the possibility of uploading the map while playing.

Neither do I.

I suspect you just make a package for your map and advertise it online so others can download and apply.

But I think that is kinda stupid when you could just be able to DL and share maps ingame... w/o coopedit.

This one was discussed a few months ago. The problem is with malformed map files. If a cheater wanted to, he could force-send a malformed map file to everyone and crash the game.

That's why.

why does the game crash with a malformed map header (or even an incompatible version) ANYWAYS? It should just load the default map again...

How do you force-send a map? As far as I knew, sending a map merely sent the map to the server and everyone had to do a /getmap to receive it. I don't know where a /getmap is forced. If this does happen, it should be disabled.

The cheater would use a hacked Sauerbraten client.

Yes, but if everyone else uses regular clients, it should not be possible to force-send a map anyway, the client should simply ignore that command.

And that regular client could check if the map was valid and only then load it, else staying at the current map.

Everyone would getmap before they realized the problem. It wouldn't be forced, but they'd think they were getting a new map when actually they would crash.

Again, why would it crash? If there's a problem, just load the default level.

Greywhind I dont know who told you that but they didn't know what they were talking about.

As it is, this very second, a "cheater" could upload a "malformed map file" on a coop server. Cheaters already can, and sometimes do, send bad map files. You end up having people w/ two different maps loaded on the same server.

Its been discussed before, and it would have limitations even if it was added (.cfgs could not be distributed). Plus, hacked clients could send malformed map files, causing everyone on the server to disconnect.

Passa as I said above, hacked clients can already send malformed map files.

I double checked myself. Unlike what shadow,516 said, you can completely crash the game w/ a bad map file.

Sense this is a problem for coop, by your logic, we shouldn\'t have coop either.

Holy fuck you guys we have to disable coop right away cause a hacker can send malformed map files and crash everyone! This is a warning to everyone: DO NOT JOIN COOP OR YOU WILL DIE.

I understand that it DOES crash sauerbraten, I just think it's possible to fix.

It is possible to fix - simply, you have to verify whether the file data meets the criteria etc, as well as all the cubes are put in valid places... Well, takes some work to do.

1veedo: a bad map file crashes the game. a bad config file can destroy your installation, or in some cases - affect your system pretty badly!

Perhaps a preview function for sending cfgs? Players could then quickly preview it before loading.

The verification of the validity of the map must not take place on the senders' sauer application but on the receivers'. Problem of hacked clients solved.

As Drakas already said, that'll require quite some work from the developers.
