new cube file is corrupted

The new sauerbraten has a problem. tar and gunzip say the file is bad. I tried downloading it twice and got the same problem both times.

It is not Sauerbraten's fault. It is Sourceforge's fault as well as your ability to go to http://sf.net/project/sauerbraten/ and choose a different mirror and download a different file.
