Could cube 1 port to the gp2x?

by Sparc-le on 12/16/2006 11:04, 7 messages, last message: 12/20/2006 21:16, 988 views, last view: 05/02/2024 02:30

Could there be a port of cube 1 to the gp2x console? this would be cool. maybe it could be ported not to use opengl but use the graphics co-processor is has instead. The gp2x looks as if it might be capable of running a low-powerd cube client.

What do others think?

The PSP (overall) has a more powerful graphics processor, and once the CPU is set to its full speed (Sony have it underclocked for the moment to save battery power) it is more powerful than the GP2X. But the problem with both is that they do not have enough memory to run Cube. The PSP only has 32MB of RAM and 2MB of VRAM, just not enough to run Cube without some huge changes.

So the answer, probably, is no. Although anything is possible.. I've got Quake and Quake II on my PSP at the moment ;)

The gp2x has 64MB of RAM, but I don't know if that's making any difference.

there is the Yeti3D engine, thats an engine that runs on the gp2x, based on (or just inspired by) cube. But the website is down and i cant find any downloads :(
I would really like to check Yeti3D out.

massive rewrite of the rendering code and i think it'd work.. but i'm no coder :(

btw the 2x has no 3d chip in it at all.. which would complicate things. I've got yeti3d working on mine and it goes quite fast actually, woohoo :)

Remember, the GP2x is very similar to the iPod in some ways (processor)

What are you talking about? GP2X is very disimilar to iPod. Sure, they both use ARMs, but so does almost every other portable device on the planet.

IMHO the main problem with running full 3D on the second processor is the miniscule amount of cache memory on that processor. There are already projects to do OpenGL on it though.
