Cheaters...

by blahville on 11/17/2006 03:41, 68 messages, last message: 05/19/2007 13:19, 12172 views, last view: 05/19/2024 04:32, closed on 05/19/2007 20:55

Hello,

People are cheating again. It is "Teddy" and someone named "PL". Maybe they are the same people. Usually you will also see them as "unnamed" with a really high score. Another sign is that rockets are missing when you start a level (thats happened a lot with PL).

So for the developers, is there anything in the works for cheaters? I liked the "trusted users" idea I read somewhere a while back. You can put the server in trusted mode and then if your master only people you have become "friends" with can play. Otherwise they sit in spectator mode.

Also to help prevent cheating how about the server part having some rules? Like if someone shoots out 100 rockets a second.. well, they might be a cheater. The server could just simply put them in spectator mode. At least maybe make this an option to turn on? Maybe have a rules XML file at the server level so it's left flexible enough to keep up with the cheaters?

Server side sanity checks are good, distributed trust is good. XML? Not so much...

#4: I NEVER CHEATED!!!

I hate this!!!! Everytime someone cheats my name comes up, but im not cheating. Either blahville is a total lier(unlikely) or someone stole my name(likely)

Yeah sorry Teddy the person stole your name. It is that "PL" though, I have played him a couple times. I think he has auto aim. But someone else is cheating even worse by freezing the server as well.

#7: XML

by blahville on 11/17/2006 06:52

By XML I just meant you store your rules in that format. It can be any format. Just a flexible format for the server to be able to say for example anyone who shoots a rocket 100 times per minute is a cheater and to do something with them.

Maybe the Master Server could define the rules for all the other servers.

#8: bug?

by blahville on 11/17/2006 07:10

So someone named "unnamed" just simply entered a server and my game froze. Aren't they just exploiting a bug?

I just had it reported in our forum too.

Seems like some scumbag is playing about again!

Changing nicknames in sauer is pretty easy.

Very unrelated to game development, but integrating CSpace would be interesting :)

Overall, really, I would be happy to see XML integrated in such parts as server registration, server list retrieval as well as ability to remotely control the server for management. Automatic control XML files would be an awsome idea - such as a person moving from one place to another too quickly (hm, there is RL that takes you a long way, but cancel out any shots!), shooting too fast, having no nickname or simply sending messages while they are not replying to server's messages :/
Server statistics and all these things would really improve the game for users a lot.
Using XML in C++ is not such a big thing but still takes time when integrating with the server engine :/
Just my suggestion!

Why don't do a protocol against cheating ?

The server knows : (for example)

Shoot rapidity : 2 fires/second
Health when starting : 100
Ammo when starting : 5

And if someone don't respect that numbers, he can't connect :p

He keeps a pretty consistent cheating methodology and is easy to detect if you play a lot. I have his ip so when he joins my server I kick him now. He usually switches his name near the end of the match to PL. Me an Miki were discussing this yesterday. He also likes to change his name to {PRO}Conor and run around telling people to get off the servers.

#12: Anti-Cheat

by MeatROme on 11/17/2006 17:07

Guys ... your both not programmers -
we've seen enough "well meant but not thought through" suggestions @ anti-cheat in this community already.
The next release will have cryptographic identities to enable you to avoid cheaters.
sauerbraten is a lot about "openness" so the burden lies with the player himself/herself to decide wether to play in restricted enviroment only or allow newbies to join and maybe find out there cheaters.

Anti-Cheating is a very complex issue - when on an open-source project even more so - please don't make aard blow his cool on this ... again!

BTW - the server is kept minimal by design AFAIK - it doesn't do much else than multiplexing (distributing the packets appropriately).

Thanks!

Cheating on an open-source game...that's lame. Like, seriously.

Go back to Counter-Strike, nub D=

Don't refer to cheaters using nicknames. Just refer to them as "cheater #5" for example ;)

There's no need to blame it on somebody with a nickname as far as changing the nickname is as simple as /name <Nickname> !
