Bug in Cube2 - No jump key!!!!

by sauer men can't jump on 10/28/2006 21:45, 44 messages, last message: 11/03/2006 21:11, 23188 views, last view: 05/18/2024 16:08

The basic Jump key from Cube 1, the \"right control\", is missing from Cube 2. This violates FPS control standards, and is different from how Cube 1 is. Did someone just forget to add this basic function? Or is there actually a good reason?

I found this bug in 3 different \"Sauerbraten\" installs that I did. I even tried to bind the key, but it said that the Ctrl key did not exist.

(Other keys, such as space bar, are not near as easy for jumping, being located far from the arrows, preventing jumping and moving at the same time. It worked GREAT in Cube 1 as right-ctrl)

Please strongly consider fixing the \"no jumping function\" bug in the next Sauer release. I get fragged a lot now that I can\'t jump anymore.

"This violates FPS control standards"

If you want to play it that way, THE most standard key for jump is SPACE, used by the majority of players. Second is probably RMB, and both are bound by cube 2 by default. I don't know of anyone using RCTRL.

I am amazed how upset people can get when things don't work the way they expect in sauer, especially when the error is on their side.

The ctrl keys are called "rctrl" and "lctrl" you can bind em.

to Drakas: In Cube 1, right ctrl was the jump key. I never right-moused, and that is not as easy anyway, because I\'d constantly have to move my firing finger from the left key to the right key.

Right-ctrl worked GREAT in Cube 1, and no other option is as easy. Is there a good reason for this bug? Or did someone goof?

Thanks for the bind instruction. It would be nice if it actually worked properly out of the box, but I\'ll try to get by on this. Will the \"bind\" save each time? I\'ve never had to patch around Cube* bugs with bind before.

I used RCTL because I found it in the CUBE INSTRUCTIONs. Its location next to the arrow control keys is the obvious place. Was there a good reason to disable this and require a binding patch in order to get around the bug? The mistake was certainly not mine: I never disabled the jump key. Someone else told me that the control keys were supposed to be the same between Cube 1 and Cube 2.

you are probably the only person i know who plays with the arrow keys. most people i know use WASD. And it is possible to use two fingers on the mouse as this is what most people do. That way one finger to left click and one to right click and you can still use the wheel easily. And if you read the above posts you would see that it is not a bug, it is intentional.

Move your firing finger over to right mouse button? Unless you lost your middle and ringfinger this sound extremely weird.. are you sure you grasped the concept of mice yet?

The reason to "disable" this was probably noone has ever heard of anyone using ctrl to jump (only people who use arrow keys as if it was 1995 use it)..
WASD or ESDF is the most ergonomical setup, with this, space or mouse2 is the only reasonable bind for jump.

You know this isn´t a company selling a product for big money and employing useability-professionals, so calm down, lol, you downloaded this for 0 $ .

And yes once you typed the bind ingame it will be stored in your config.cfg

If it doesn't exist create one ...
and add
<snip>
name "jump@last"
team "RTFM"

while your at it :)

The first thing I do on any game setup is make the arrow keys for forward, back, and strafe left & right. I just push my keyboard over to the left and use only the right side (by number lock) as the "gaming portion" of the keyboard.

Mitaman, use wasd.. really it´s so much more comfortable, takes a day to get used to, no more pushing the keyboard around, and so many more keys around at closer reach.

WASD is not that comfortable since my left hand is already on the mouse, and it is kind of scrunched to twist over so both hands are way to the left like that. The arrow keys for directions is the easiest, and it is a LOT more intuitive too (press up arrow to go up!) Cube2 supports this actually.

One finger only on the mouse is the way for a left-hander to use a mouse. The only finger to the right of my index finger is my thumb, and it is not comfortable to use that for the right mouse button.

I've seen 3 different explanations from Cube insiders on this so far: 1) my install was bad. 2) it was forgotten and 3) it was intentional. All I know is it worked great in cube1. At least there IS a patch for cube2! No more jumpless scuttling, and at least I don't have to push the keyboard around like is required for WASD.

"Move your firing finger over to right mouse button? Unless you lost your middle and ringfinger this sound extremely weird"

The thumb is the only one near the right-mouse button, so it is easier to move the index finger back and forth for GUI operation. However, for games it means no fast firing and jumping at the same time (unless the game is ergonomically designed and has decent keyboard controls).

"Can't teach an old dog new tricks!" they say. Seriously, I really like the arrow keys for movement, rmb for jump, lmb to fire, and mmb for alt fire on games that have it.

And on games that use things like reload, use/open, flashlight, etc... I remap the insert, home, end keys, etc.. just above the arrows keys. I never need to look down to see what I'm doing.

It just works for me, oh, and I always reverse the mouse view. It may all seem weird, but it works for me.

Sorry, I just expected Cube2 to have the same basic keyboard game play as Cube1. The jumping saves, and it works fantastic. For once the game looks GREAT.

I loved cube1, and now that I patched around the bug, I love cube2. Seriously, is the project taking donations?

Lol why don´t you mention you´re left handed in the first place?

Still I don´t get why you can only use your index finger. There are many mice for both left and right handed. Plus, any mouse lets you switch the left and right buttons, if that´s the problem. And I know some left handed folks who do just that.

If I was left handed, I´d jump with my thumb either on kp0 or righghtarrow and use numpad for movement.

I used to play UT (this is yeeears ago) with the arrow keys and mouse2 for jump. But I got tired of rebinding EVERY SINGLE FUCKING GAME as soon as I installed em. Plus WASD is the standard, its extremely comfortable and easy to play with.

For left handers WASD is still viable to use. Put the mouse on the other side of the keyboard and switch hands. Swap the mouse buttons in Control Panel. You will though have to use mouse2 jump, as space jump is hard to do with a left hand.

ANYWAY this whole boring thread WOULD have been avoided had you just realised this isnt a fucking bug and posted in the general thread :)

Yeah, I'm pretty surprised that there are still people who don't use wasd or edsf...

Out of curiosity, those who don't use wasd, what do you use to jump? Space is easy with wasd because the thumb is right there.

uhh, yeah, being left handed makes a difference!!

My suggestion (if you're willing to try something new) would to rebind all of your keys using ijkl like wasd... then space is easy and all is good... but that may screw with sauer's editing features. I don't know if they've got seperate editing keys now.

"Lol why don´t you mention you´re left handed in the first place?"

Cube 2 is the first game I've found where it even made a difference.

"There are many mice for both left and right handed. Plus, any mouse lets you switch the left and right buttons"

I learned to use a regular mouse, so I don't have to carry a special one around with me wherever I go. And by using it the regular way, all I have to do is move the mouse, and I don't even have to dig into the poorly-designed-and-buried Windows option to turn it on and off every time.

With WASD, my thumb is at the LEFT CTRL or the windows key (depending on the keyboard). The space bar might make sense to go with a key combination like IJKL
