Sauerbraten

Hi guys. I'm a new player to your game and I enjoy it alot. The art is pretty good, not to mention the lack of drainage of fps that most FPS games take up. Not to mention that high ping doesnt cost much in your servers (which I really like =D) BUt some problems I have with this game kind of ruin the experience a little. First, I think the railgun is way, way too overpowered for such a straightfire, MSG. I really think if it's going to be that powerful, the bullets should go a little sparadic instead of shooting in a straight line or the dmg should be lowered alot*. Like 2-3 hp a bullet. Also...I cant see what I say in a server, it just shows up as
*Aero: *
and I have no idea if what I'm saying get's through or not. Furthermore, key bindings are completely confusing for weapons. I'm guessing each map has 4 weapons to pick up and use but the keybindings I try to use are completely random and pull guns that are out of whack with their numbers on other maps. Not totally sure on how that works but even the scroll wheel pulls up random weapons or scrolls between 2-3 without getting to the one I need or want. If someone could explain 2 me or maybe fix in a future patch, it could make Sauerbraten alot more faster paced and evened out. I'll be trying to get a couple of my gaming friends into this game, and their friends into it also via Xfire and whatnot. I'd like to get a team going for matches since I don't see many around here. Turnys might help with that also ;)
Well anyway,
thanks for letting me address my questions and trivial matters
~Aero

railgun? You mean, the chaingun (the one with green ammo)? If then, I must say it is less powerful than it was on Cube. Its total ammunition has been reduced from 100 to 60, and it is not as precise as it was before.

If you mean the rifle (the one with blue ammo), then it is really powerful, but slow. If you miss it, you become "open" for almost two seconds.

About the weapon-change system, I've said before the same thing you said, but looks like developers don't want to change that. I agree with you, the weapon changing is "random" (or feels like random).

The idea is each key or mouse wheel has a list of weapons. When pressing a key (or scrolling the wheel), the game will select the first weapon on that list that satisfies the following two conditions: 1. has ammo; 2. is not the current one.

I think you mean the mg. Yes it´s powerfull, but has already been toned down. It gets quite unaccurate at a distance.

You can still assign individual keys to your guns, with a certain preference of what to select when you don´t have that gun.

All it takes is getting used to keep in mind what ammo you have available..you´ll get used to it.

Minigun?

You have to play little more to understand the weapons and how to switch them.

Well, a problem with the messages probably exists, but not for me at least.
Keybindings are perfect, and if you've read the docs you should know how to customize them.

Lol yeah the chaingun, it still feels way too powerful for me on the majority of the maps its on because most of them are full of hallways and enclosed spaces which makes it kind of easy to sit and spam the weapon unless some opponent already knows where u are and sends granades in the area or something. But I dont think it has too much ammo, its just the extreme amount of damage each bullet causes, making it a spray/spam weapon. The bullets kind of spread out along a far distance but even at mid range, its still above average on accuracy because all the bullets will hit your body no matter where player1* may aim.

This game really doesn't have an all out learning curve and that makes it worse since begginners will just go on to spam the most powerful weapons instead of choosing the right weapon for the situation.

Also, I've configured my cfg bindings for my weapons but they still dont seem to work right. Each weapon is bound to one key

bind Weapon 1 [1]
bind Weapon 2 [2]

like so..but Im guessing that if weapon 1 is out of ammo, weapon 2 will appear? Then some random weapon comes after I hit 2 again. Very very very complicated. If that's the case, the weapon shouldnt switch at all to acknowledge the fact that player1* has no chaingun ammo and needs more to fight with it. But I guess because guns are in ammoboxes instead of free standing, that creates a problem in itself.

And the rifle is really fast compared to other rifles of its kind in Quake type games so Im fine with it lol.

*player1, example Cube2 player (lol)

My keybindings:
Q = shotgun or rifle (or chaingun or rifle, I don't remember)
E = chaingun or rifle (or shotgun or rifle, I don't remember)
F = pistol or fist (or fist or pistol)
Shift = rockets or grenades

I like these bindings. With one or two key presses I can get any weapon. And if I don't get the weapon I want, I get a "similar".

hum... If someday sauerbraten implements weapon up/down (getting the weapon up to screen, or bringing it back to inventory), the way weapon bind works must change.

That's the problem though. You should NOT settle for weapons. One major component of any gunning game is choosing the right weapon for the situation.

Example: A person is chasing me with pistol and I want to rocket jump to get away from them but a rifle comes out instead, so I die.

Not good at all.

Example: A person is chasing me with pistol and I want to rocket jump to get away from them but [ I forgot I didn´t have any rockets] a rifle comes out instead, so I die.

See ? If it were like in other games, you´d have pressed your rocket-button, and nothing would have happened. Quite the same outcome.

Just bind your weapons to specific keys and think about what you´d like to get if the gun isn´t available. You´ll get used to it. You´ll learn to keep in mind wich gun you got, good thing too.

here´s what I use:

bind lalt "weapon 1 3 1 0"
bind e "weapon 3 1 3 0"
bind q "weapon 2 4 2 0"
bind c "weapon 4 2 4 0"
bind mouse2 [weapon 0;fov
bind lshift "weapon 4 2 4 0"

I know it´s confusing at first, but in the end it works out just as good.

If you move your mousewheel up, the rocket launcher comes up (if you have rockets; else it's the machinegun). If you move your mouse down, the rifle or the shotgun come up. Easy as that.

A back-and-turn jump and wipe him out with the shotgun is also solution in this situation. Or run around the next corner and wait for him with the shotgun. =)

Damn I love the shotgun...
