Sauer 9-12 and Mobility Radeon X300 on Vista

by homeo_eglasias on 09/30/2006 08:18, 15 messages, last message: 10/08/2006 14:59, 1400 views, last view: 04/26/2024 23:09

I recently installed Vista RC1 Build 5600 and discovered that Sauer runs differently. This may be an unfixable problem at this stage, but current Sauer reports \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"your video card is WAY too old\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and fails on \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"No texture_env_combine extension!\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"

I will try installing DirectX to see if this alleviates the problem.

......

After installing the latest version of DirectX, it still reports \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"your video card is WAY too old\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" with \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"No texture_env_combine extension!\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"

Wierd.

that would be because sauerbraten uses opengl, and your video card obviously doesnt have support for all of the opengl features used in sauerbraten.

how about this: your video card IS WAY TOO OLD, and installing vista isn't going to make any difference... what card do you have anyway?

Rumor has it that Vist simply does not support OpenGL properly at all...

Yeah, as Jaywalker said, Sauerbraten does not use DirectX. It use OpenGL.

Do you have updated your graphic-card driver ?
http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

GL_ARB_texture_env_combine is supported by X300.
http://www.delphi3d.net/hardware/extsupport.php?extension=GL_ARB_texture_env_combine

Then, if after your driver update you still have this problem, it means that it does come from Windows Vista ...

Also, ATI's opengl drivers for Vista are still BETA.

nVidia and ATI provide their own drivers for OpenGL.
On the other hand, M$ said that they are going to create a layer of OpenGL that will basically wrap around DirectX. Full of crap!

I'm not upgrading to Vista anyway, in recent tests with RC1, PC User found gaming performance drop by up to 50%, and general performance drop by like 20%.

I dont need you Aero interface!

So 50%/20% slower than really slow (if that makes sense)? Eww..

If a user wants to use an operating system for word processing, they surely will have to spend at least extra £300 for upgrading to something latest if using WinXP.

High performance is really needed for specific tasks, such as gaming, designing, 3D graphics and others - not for main use - like the Aero gives.
Nobody has to use Aero, there's something that isn't as bad.

I suggest that everyone goes to Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu. Come on - it is all free!!!

I have this exaxt same problem on Vista with a Radeon X300 - I think we will just have to wait for ATI to bring out some updated drivers with proper Open GL support before playing on windows Vista

X300 is new enough to run Sauer, just maybe not yet in Vista, but the Vista 3d screensavers do work. I think Vista will probably be optimized later, it seems faster in 2d, even w/ the alpha blending.

hopefully it won't require a ton of reworking to build sauer in vista.

vista has no run.. button!

i would use linux but it does not support my Sprint PCS Mobile Wireless Aircard, so.. sorry!
