Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

Will the idiocy never cease?

by eihrul on 09/29/2006 21:12, 33 messages, last message: 10/05/2006 19:17, 10111 views, last view: 05/18/2024 23:24

First we have dumbasses going around crashing clients remotely, now we have dumbasses deciding to spam the forums.

Umm... why? What do people stand to gain from this stupidity? Do people really hate our project so much that you'd rather see it go away? Is it to regale your grandchildren with stories of how back in the day you annoyed the hell out of a little open source project of not much consequence, and forced them to shut down little by little? "Gee, Billy, when I was your age, I was out destroying the part time hobby of two virtually unknown random guys on the internet. How cool is that?"

How do we instill either so much hatred in people? I don't get it. I really don't.

I meant to say "either so much hatred in people, or come off as a meaningful target?"

I'm fairly convinced that the internet in general started going downhill when it became easily accessable to 12 year olds.

I don't think age has that much to do with it. I'm not thinking anything actually (as usual) but the way I see it - people who can code applications are rare (compared to the rest of Earth's population), and here in this community they are probably more than the "non-coders".

Well, this is pretty much like spam. Or like viruses, worms. What's the point? To p|ss others off?
Some people are such noobs and assholes and have nothing else to do than just to stop other people from enjoying the game.

Well, actually, basically describing as "Losers".

Just almost the same thing like in lessons.

So don't piss about in lessons too, if any of you do !:)
Even talking is not acceptable. You go to school for education. Use it.

"Gee, Billy, when I was your age, I was out destroying the part time hobby of two virtually unknown random guys on the internet. How cool is that?"

That was classic :P

The internet is littered with retards, and it baffles the mind as to why there has to be so many spambots and hackers making their rounds..

Age has next to nothing to do with it, I'm sure a 12 year old would eventually get over the novelty of having 10,000 health, and I doubt theyd create spambots to target a certain site (if they even knew how)..

The most hurting thing it seems in all this is the fact that this forum is practically proprietary, so any spambots etc are specifically targeting this community :(

by doelf on 09/30/2006 01:40

Hell, we got Spammers all over our forum each day. We delete the SPAM and try to get them by the balls (provider, hoster). It works often enough.

If you get SPAM you know that Google finds your project :-)

I am not referring to the spam bots, I expect that stupidity.

What I am referring to is the guy who just purposely posted the following 700 times in the general thread:

"#7313: I BEAT THE MAN

by KING KRUL on 09/29/2006 17:54 through 216.185.128.200 | censor

THERES ALWAYS A WAY AROUND... ... ..."

The weirdest thing when posting that I find is how the captcha is done.
It is very easy to make a bot that would be "human" because there is not much security in there.

Now you have <input type="hidden" value="7 + 2" name="captcha_puzzle" >

with regex, you take out the "7 + 2" and then simply evaluate it or whatever. Is that hard? No.

Maybe the best idea is to create a list of IDs for each question, and display the question in { - | form.

When opening up a new thread display, a new ID will be picked. If a user posts with the same captcha ID, they will obviously not be able to post. How fun =)

It is a real forum, loads shitloads faster than other forums as well (youll see how benefical that is when youre shaped to 64k).

CC_machine, I'm sure he didnt mean it literally, but it is true, most cheaters are the younger generation (see counter-strike for proof of that)

Passa states my point well. After all, who else possesses the lack of maturity needed to think that cheating at sauerbraten would be "fun"?

This is a real forum. I see nothing wrong with this. This is way faster and more secure than crappy phpBB or any other "forums" that are overweight.

I think I'll script one like this for my own use, cause this type of forum is very fast :)

I thought of yet another solution.

No "Deny" list. But an "Allow" list.
When a user who has not been authenticated connects to a server, they are disconnected with message as address to the authentication.

Authentication website allows the user to register and sign in with their current IP. When they sign in, the server checks if the IP has been authenticated and if yes, it allows the user to join the game.

That authentication should be done in-game. And I guess this will require also to block people who try to authenticate too many times (block for some minutes could be enough).

No. Nothing should be done in-game. This is because the game is open source.
Authentication should be only the server thing.

Basically, this is like those torrent sites that need you to login before you could use the tracker with your IP address.

By in-game I mean "using game interface".

I don't want to quit the game, launch a browser just to be able start the game again and play multiplayer.
