#990: Re: Help?

by ShewtmieIRBdaNeWbIe on 12/15/2002 15:26, refers to #987

I appologise, it was late that night, and I didnt give enough information

P3, 500 Mhz
Win98 2ed
128 MB
8meg vid card, nvida

The program starts fine, it seems to switch to fullscreen okay, but the problem that occurs is opposite the one the guy stated in the other fourm, yeah, the one about graphics problems that I should be posting in? I appologise, again, a product of a very late night post.

Anyway, tribes 1 posed a similar problem occasionaly, with the TRPG mod and fullscreen. SOME parts of the map seem to work, like occasionaly I can see a wall, or even the big cubelike outdoors. If anyone can help me figure it out, Id be much obliged. Thanks!

Points to make sure:

Does your video card support full OpenGL? It sounds like your card is rather old, it might be that it doesn't. Don't tell us other games work fine - Cube makes use of OpenGL commands that other games hardly use, so it's likely that other games work while Cube doesn't.

If you are sure that it does support OpenGL fine, make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

For further help, tell us exactly which nvidia card you have (TNT?).

NVidia Vanta (Gateway - English) Hardware version 021, (giggle) Driver date is 1999... hehe.

Does that help? For all I know, it more than likely dosnt have full OpenGL support, when the computer was purchased, I didnt have much of an option on what I was allowed to get. I need a new vid-card anyway, so, what type would you suggest? My budget is kind of limited..

Piglet - Yes, without knowing what command lshift is bound to.

I've tried the alias route, only problem is, an alias expects to contain commands, not keynames.

So, if you were to create the following, it still doesn't work:

alias SHIFT "LSHIFT; RSHIFT"
BIND LSHIFT to SHIFT

The reason that's not working is because when the alias is run, it returns the error "unknown command LSHIFT" and "unknown command RSHIFT". that's because LSHIFT and RSHIFT aren't commands, they are keynames.

Any other ideas?

Go for an nvidia card again, maybe a used Geforce 2 Ti400 or even better a Geforce 3. Just don't get a Geforce MX, they are crap.

On a limited budget? I would recommend a geForce2mx. You can probably get one used. It's reasonably fast for the price, and runs Cube great.

#997: Any way to turn down the gore?

by SHOCK on 12/15/2002 21:09

Hello All:

I have just started playing Cube. I am very impressed. I usually let my young son play games like this by turning off blood or gore, when that option is available. Is there a setting for this?

Thanks in advance!

You could probably replace the gibs models with something else.

I actually did none of the above: I got a new driver, the latest from Nvidia, and it runs like a dream! The game is awsome! Cube = new favorite on my list.

Aard, isn't there a map for blood ? I was thinking of this as well, I'm sure you can edit the model so they turn to stones and the huds as something not deadly, what texture makes up the blood splatter anyways ? If this can be found, you might be able to modify it to sweat instead, but if you your son is smart, he might be able to make it gory himself.

#1003: Cold boot :(

by Al_Capone on 12/16/2002 05:17

I been having problems with my computer lately, sometimes my computer coldboot right in a the game, I'm not sure what it is, I think its the power surply, because the case I took out of was use for a 486 CPU, the power surply barely meets the voltage requirement, anyone have any ideal what else the problem could be, like a short or setting ?

A bad power supply can definitly cause that.

Replace your power supply ASAP, your hardware might take permanent damage if you keep on using the old one.

sorry, there are no keyboard rotate and strafe toggle keys. for 99% of the gaming population they died out with doom.

I know you don't wanna hear yet someone else say "use the mouse", but you really do. It really is a superior control method, fact, not opinion.

there is a -g command line option (originally implemented for the german market) which stops rendering gore (i.e. the chunks of flesh lying around) but does not disable the blood (as that wasn't required).

mmmm... one bad way to reduce or eliminate blood is of course to take the particle texture and modify it (all black means it won't be drawn at all). Of course that also eliminates the other particle effects...

of course if you are able to use a compiler I can tell you what to change to disable blood :)

I suppose it would reboot if your system has an occational peek in power-consumption (like sound card, cpu, gpu, ram, and everything running at the exact same moment or something), and that peek going above the voltage limit... just not normally? Bah, i'm no good with that stuff, i just get a big bad PSU instead of worrying :P
