#88: URGENT/READ: server crashing

by eihrul on 02/05/2002 22:26

Thanks to metz I pin-pointed the cause of the server crashing. This bug effects both the client and the server, so both client and server must have and should get the following updated executables.
Updated executables for all unix platforms at http://tunes.org/~eihrul/cube_bin_unix_2002_02_05.zip

Did it have anything to do with editing, or am I just off my nut?

It did and it didn't... editing is one situation that aggrivated the bug, but was not the cause of the bug itself. The bug was actually a problem with my packet fragmentation code, which of course only gets used if really huge packets get sent in Cube, which rarely happens (except when you see a crash). So I just fixed that and I made the server code check for errors in fragmented packets sent by still buggy clients, so ultimately the worst that should happen is buggy clients get disconnected, so long as an updated server is used. Updated clients should work properly. :)

#91: RE: FPS bug

by GOK on 02/07/2002 12:01

Add the command line switches for width and height to the cube.bat file.....

bin\cube.exe -w1024 -h768

for 1024 x 768

I had the same problem but then I changed the bit depth and resolution under windows (to lower settings, 16 bit colors and 800x600) and then got 40 FPS :)

Hey aard, i have yet to test these new versions for linux, but I'm glad to see that you've gotten Cube off the ground quickly and successfully. Continued good luck!

Cheers,

#98: great potential!

by dwr on 02/15/2002 01:19

I tried out this engine quickly tonight, and am very impressed.

This looks a lot better than many commercial products, and I think it has great potential.

The visuals are excellent. :)

#99: Running .cfg files

by Bascule on 02/15/2002 20:49

I want to execute a separate .cfg file on start-up. I tried putting the command in autoexec, but the game crashes before it even starts.
Is there a way of doing this?

just write: " exec name.cfg "
at the end in the autoexec.cfg
(if it still crashes, tell me what exactly do u want to do with the .cfg /execute)

btw, this is the #100 posting :)

Yes, that is what I did, and it does cause the engine to crash (can't remember the error message!)

It's not a big deal, as I have worked around it, I just wanted to know if the engine should have crashed or not.

I was just using it to kick off an 'alias' config, as mentioned in one of the other threads, until aliasing is built-in :)

#102: most wanted 'feature'

by pushplay on 02/17/2002 02:07

Here's what I've noticed, there never seems to be anyone on the servers. As a result I don't hang around the servers for very long at any given time, and I think this is just a viscous circle of no damn fun. I think it would be cool if we scheduled some times or something so that everyone would know a good time to find people online. I've only played once with more than 4 people, but that was an absolute blast.

full ack. Twice I persuaded friends of mine to install Cube and play online, all servers were empty though.
Setting up a "Scheduled Games" thread might be the best way for now. Kohan online matches were often scheduled through Loki's ng.

Another suggestion:
Would it be possible to set up a new page for user-written maps? I mean, including thumb/screenshot, author's comments, and a rating system perhaps? Personally, I suck big time at PHP, but the authors of this site apparently don't so it might be possible.
