Yeah, Yeah!!
Servers want to be Free (and I don't just mean as in beer)
I've heard rumors that lobby groups for the evil server admins are trying to backdoor rcon privileges into future releases! This will of course completely erode our rights as players, and goes against everything the Open Server spirit stands for!
If this goes through, you will no longer be able to play the maps you want to play, with the people you want to play them with! You will be at the mercy of fasicst server admins who can kick you without cause! You won't be able to change game modes, or play TRULY FREE AND PUBLIC games again!
As players it is our duty to stand up and be heard! You can help by going to the FOSS website, http://www.freeandopenserversforsauerbraten.com and sign the petition, NOW!
WE WILL NOT BE ADMINISTRATED!!!!

Universal Plug&Play has nothing to do with sauerbraten.
Are you playing on the same computer as you used to post?
Since the masterserver update list is transferred just like any other webpage it will work on any computer able to surf the interwebs.
If your servers.cfg (located in the main cube or sauerbraten (cube 2) folder) is empty you could copy this to it (but I cannot guarantee for the validity of IPs over long periods of time or the uptime of any server)
addserver 85.214.56.73
addserver 85.25.52.187
addserver 217.234.74.127
addserver 62.149.14.48
addserver 82.240.106.182
addserver 68.144.13.194
addserver 70.116.9.59
addserver 219.98.38.71
addserver 203.217.70.22
I suspect what you are experiencing isn't a failing response from the master server but more likely failing to communicate with individual sauerbraten servers.
A more detailed description of your problem (e.g. what you see or don't see (if you expect to see something)) would certainly help to help you.
Sauerbraten Network Communication is not implemented via http over tcp on port 80 (like (almost) all surfing).
It is done via ENET and uses udp and tcp.
You need to enable traffic over the respective ports, if you want to host a server a DNAT (or "port forwarding") will be required.
Sauerbraten (Cube 2) uses 28785 and 28786,
Cube uses 28765 and 28766.
If you are using a router you may want to look at http://www.portforward.com.
In case your router isn't among the (as I have heard exhaustive) collection of their database you will need to either contact your vendor, ISP or read the manual that came with it.
It is also highly recommended to read the fine manual that came with Sauerbraten. It is accessible via the README.html in you base sauerbraten folder.

Can´t really understand what should be so bad about maprotation/fraglimit and gamemode being set by the server admin.

Mmmh. I'm all torn this way and that on this subject.
There are pros and cons to control.
I like the open philosophy of the current system pretty much, but I also like to play with settings of stuff I run on my boxes ...
I think there are still some potentially good features (read control knobs) that a master or even a vote could decide on.
Frag- & TimeLimit would be definite firsts there.
The maprotation is handled client side so far - if you don't like it : vote it away, I say.
As to fixing it to a gamemode - I'd be dead against it - why on earth would any admin want to stop ppl. from playing Efficiency matches just because he likes FFA/Duel best?
Ah - don't tell me - because he actually likes the way Microsoft "does it" and wants to force (l)users to see the error of their ways when all they want is to be free to make "the right choice"!?!
SCNR ;-)
I say: more features for the master and even some rcon-style take-over to show them who's boss on this box ... but don't make servers that are in perpetual Instagib Arena (or whatever). Maybe even locked into only allowing a single map to be played.

Why not?
I do appreciate freedom as well. But on the other hand, if I wanna play insta 1v1 only, and there´d be an insta 1v1 only server, I´d join that one. Someone else out there might want the same and join. Guess it would piss you off more if you´d join a server and the guy who´s master simply changes to modes you don´t want to play, than reading the server description and know what to expect.
"FFA 20 clients.. nope. capture/forced teams 8 clients.. hell yea." (sorry had to mention forcede teams yet again)
Imho better than having to hope you get to play what you want all the time, or force it onto others when you´re master.
If you´re saying :"vote insta then.." okay. That´s a vote. That´s democracy. Should work fine, either adapt or leave. But in reality, you´ll always have some people around who haven´t figured out voting yet.
I´ve always been for a "usual"(as seen in almost EVERY fps out there) voting system. Someone calls it, then press f1 or f2. Imho there´s nothing wrong with such standarts, it would simply make playing easier, because a lot more votes will actually be DONE, no matter the outcome. It´s rather frustrating to see the vote fail just because it´s not intuitive to vote in cube/sauerbraten.
maybe that one or two novice players would love to vote for it too..
Anyhow, I think people that host and decide to donate their bandwidth to the players (some even pay extra to do so) should be given the right to be in fair control of what they offer. I think you´d still find a lot of servers that have no restrictions and simply use the current setup.
To me it just sounds a bit unfair to say "you can host, cool, tnx, but now obey to sauer/unnamed coz he accidentally got master."
There are people out there who like to customize their game to a certain extend. Think of clan-servers, 1on1 servers, capture servers, whatever. It could simply help make it more attractive imho.
I don´t think a server admin will want no people on his server all the time, so if he sees that his maprotation/choosen gamemoder or whatever settings aren´t considered good by the players, he´ll simply change em. That way players would be voting too in a way.. of course we have a bit few players atm for this to be effective, but maybe we´d have more servers too if admins could try out stuff.
And in most other games, people´s favoutite server isn´t decided by ping only, but for such things as max clients, maprotation, frag or timelimit, etc. The best times in gaming I had was playing on servers that had a certain setup, so you´d meet and fight the same ppl every night, who liked just the same stuff about the game, wich is much more fun than just hop on a random server and meet anyone, just because it doesn´t matter at all what server you choose (even moreso with cube/sauer´s brilliant netcode), and maybe not get to play what you like best bout the game.
Err sorry for the rant hehe. Just my 2 cent.

#6022: Firewalls |

I'm on campus a lot of my time and would like to play Cube and Sauer when I can but it seems that the campus has a firewall that isolates it. I know there are probably ports that the admins have opened as they often use programs such as limewire. Whenever I try to update the server list or connect to a server the game will either crash or give me a message about it not reponding to the server ping. The computers as well as the server are Mac. Is there a way of getting through the firewalls or am I out of luck.

though luck.
theoretically you could recompile the source to run on a port you know is open on the firewall ... but you could then only play with people using the same modification (including server) ... so ...
tough luck. :-/

I get your point @ special setup for a server, although I think having an empty server for ppl. (with not enough bandwith to host their own) is very important.
What about this:
The admin can set a maprotation and "base gamemode" in a CFG,
then if it goes empty it will pop back to InstaGIB every time ...
but if the players want to they can still play FFA/Duel.
In conjunction with the server-admin-master-pass this would keep him/her in control but wouldn't hinder a bunch of players requiring an unoccupied server to start their 2on2 Efficiency battle.
But SP should definitely not be allowed on a server.
I'm constantly baffeled at how many servers are stuck in SP mode and why my setting doesn't override it (as I understand the source it should [if server is empty]).
Only reason for playing MultiPlayer-SP I've found so far is that in SP there is no timelimit.

And I'm sick of going on my server to find 15 unnameds wasting my bandwidth in a boring SP deathmatch. Or getting kicked of my server. Bring on admin privilages!!
makkE: I totally agree with your point on server hosters, they offer their bandwidth and CPU time to the community so people can play. They should have control of their own server.
One problem I realised, now with client limiters for servers in the next release, what if the server is full? How can the admin join? Maybe there should be an operator in the cfg for admin IPs, so that those IPs upon join will kick the newest player on the server, or random, or whatever etc.

I think forcing your way into a game wouldn't be cool - you would be ruining their whole match if you barged in during the last minute and kicked the hitherto #2 player out ... he/she might have made it to the top, but then - he/she'll never know :-/
If they are "abusing" (in _your_ opinion (ah, well - mine too)) your server by playing a 3h SP Deathmatch then you DO have the power to shut down the server.
Maybe a way around a lot of these issues would be if the server would grant console access directly, like so many other game servers.
You start the server.
You forgot to set the ... MOTD, timelimit, server description ,,, anything.
You simply type your command into the console - e voila.
This could also give you the ability to "speak" to your visitors - without actually connecting to the game.
But this would also require the server to log chat-messages as well ... this would result in way bigger server logs - not everybody will be happy with that.

Happy with being monitored or the large logs?
If its a Big Brother sorta complaint, theres no basis for that, practically every modern game logs chat messages for servers.
Large logs.. make a .bat launcher that deletes the log files and set it to run every day at 12pm or something :)
Yeah on restarting the server... remote console access would be nice. The amount of times I have to open Remote Desktop Connection and access my server pc.. >:|

it was a file size arg
/remote/ console ... mmmh, that might even be easier to implement.
I was thinking more like SSH to your box, start the server and stay connected to manhandle it.

empty the server.
bans used to be limited to a number of hours (IIRC 4 was the number) but now the ban is lifted once the server empties.
no sweat :)

Console access would be the best solution to the entire issue. If we had that, I could just do what I do with my q3ut3 server, and start it in a screen process and reattach when I need to commit random acts of administration. It would also allow many serverside mods to be implemented without source code changes, by having the mod run the server, and read output from/write commands to the server process.
As far as the issue of freedom, some people seem to be neglecting the fact that presently server ops have no freedom to control what goes on on their servers.
The way that quake 3 solves the maxclients problem is by permitting you to reserve additional slots for people with a password. E.G., you could have 8 public slots, and 3 additional admin slots.

If so - look in src/mingw/

Alright, this is making me mad. And don\'t say to forward ports, I already did that.
Usually, I\'ll be able to make a good thing in multiplayer. One random person that joins, however, will freeze up the game and force me to close it. Some people that join won\'t crash my game, some will. Could anyone please help me with this, so I may make my buildings in peace without rejoining?
