#5996: Another "Cube runs slow" question

by hygraed on 07/07/2006 07:47

I recently upgraded my computer from Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux Dapper Drake. Cube ran fine on my Windows system, but under Linux it runs unplayably slow (single-digit framerate...). Anything I need to configure here?

Specs:
1.4 GHz Intel Celeron M
446MB RAM (used to be 512, but some of it mysteriously disappeared several months ago)
128MB ATI Radeon 200M

Nothing good to tell you, unfortunately. You need to install the ATI's fglrx driver. However, the dedicated memory that your card has is not supported by fglrx, this results both in the loss of system memory you observed and poor performance. Also, as if that were not enough, I have heard that stability is fairly poor on these chips.

I installed the fglrx driver, and it still runs slow as ever. Does this mean I'm fucked, Cube-wise?

have you tryed making sure that X is configured to use your fglrx driver? i know how do to this with the nvidia driver but not a clue about fglrx, i dont use ati. do a google search on the subject. Dont be put off Ubuntu though it is the polished and solid desktop linux!

First run glxinfo, and make sure that it doesn't say anything about SGI or mesa, and that direct rendering is enabled. Otherwise, try running 'aticonfig --help'.

Direct rendering is not enabled. The "server glx vendor string" is SGI. The "OpenGL renderer string" is Mesa GLX Indirect.

Guess that's 0/3 for me, Anyone know how to fix this? (I'm a Linux noob.)

Sure...
Run aticonfig --initial, and reboot. Also, try reading the documentation that should have been installed somewhere into /usr/share/doc/fglrx* (* probably is -driver, but I can't remember ATM).

#6004: Screenmode???

by FOXit on 07/08/2006 20:52

Hi,
I tried to set a screensize with the -w and -h commands!
It looked like this:
/ -w800
/ -h600

and nothing happened! I restarted the game and the size is standart 1024x768 !??

I want to have a new Screenmode because Sauerbraten has only a framerate of 20 - 30 fps whithout bloom or this effects you can turn on, this stuff is off! My Graphicscard: Nvidia GeForce FX5500!

How to set 800x600 as the standart resolution?

My hardware: PC with 2.5Ghz,512MB Ram, Nvidia GeForce FX5500,80GB Harddisk.

You have to edit the .bat file, not the configuration file. Edit the bat and change it to this:

bin\sauerbraten.exe -w800 -h600 -f %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

Good luck.

#6007: Sauerbraten report and big forum attention on German IP-TV

by SoiA|lokirulez on 07/09/2006 19:35

Hi folks,

I just wanted to report that the german IP-TV GIGA had a news and a huge forums on the attention about Sauerbraten and the upcoming RPG Eisenstern.

Unfortunately, I don't know whether they showed some ingame scenes on GIGA or not.

#6010: GOIM (Gamers Own Instant Messenger) Support

by Goimer on 07/09/2006 20:11

I'm going to send a request to GOIM developers so that they could add Sauerbraten into the compatible game list
(GOIM website: http://goim.sphene.net/)

But they need this information, some of which I dont know:

* Full Name of the Game

well, this one is easy.. Sauerbraten

* URL to the official game homepage

http://sauerbraten.org/

* Name of the executable on windows, optionally also on other platforms. (the real game exe, not some launcher app)

bin\sauerbraten.exe
..what's on other platforms?

* start parameters needed to join a game server

...?

* Windows Registry Information to get path to executable
o Windows Registry Key
o Windows Registry Name
o String which would need to be added to the value of the provided registry key/name to get the exact match for executable

no idea

* Ports
o Default Game Port
o Default Query Port

27865 and 27866 I think?

* Either a game icon 16x16 or the .exe file from which the icon can be extracted (gmail will block .exe files so rename them to .abc)

hum.. maybe a reduced image of the cubic logo would do?

#6013: Administrating/configuring a dedicated server

by FEL on 07/10/2006 01:34

Beware! First time posting here ...

Firstly, I tried sauer for the first time last night and it seems very promising, and the cube2 engine seems very interesting. So I decided to set up a dedicated server on my linux box.

And a few questions popped up:

- Are really -m/u/n/i/M all the commands available for configuring the server? How do I setup the time/fraglimit, map rotation, maximum clients, and how can i disallow changing of maps and modes?

- I am aware of the mastermode command, but it seems like i would have to be connected to the server as a client at all times to prevent others from becoming the master. is that correct?

- and a general question, i\'d like to run a custom map on my server (not an coop-edited map) can it be downloaded in-game by the clients somehow? is there a repository or similar? Or is telling the clients where to get it the only way?

Thanks in advance,

pie. pie. pie.

by pushplay on 07/10/2006 05:46, refers to #6013

The idea of Cube servers is that there's nothing to administrate and players can do what they like. Since servers don't need a copy of the map why not let people play what they decide?
