#5055: Running Server without having bash opened

by Superdreadnought on 11/21/2005 15:04

I'd like to know, how I can keep the server running without having the remote-bash of my vServer opened (when I close it the server shuts down; and i cant have the bash open all the time (my PC's off from time to time)).

How can I do that?

I was so surprised to see a 3rd person view in Sauerbraten, really caught me off guard. Good idea, cant wait to see these rpg maps with more features.

#5058: Re: Cube in debian

by Sparr on 11/21/2005 21:34, refers to #5002

There are two issues with debian. One, non-Free media. Two, lack of multi-user support. With One, we can get into the non-free repository but not main. With Two, we can't get into either.

Stick an ampersand after the command to run the server.
E.g
./linux_server -d -nMyServer &
Or however you run it.
The ampersand will release the terminal once you press enter - so you will be able to close the shell.

To stop the server, you will have to use killall :)

#5061: Admin rights?

by Superdreadnought on 11/22/2005 16:22

Can you get admin rights to kick bad players (cheaters, spammer, etc.), to stop votes or to change the map without votes?

@kernowyon (and the rest of you guys 2): Can I create a logfile with the data the shell shows when you run cube without "&"?

@kernowyon (and the rest of you guys 2): It's possible to close the server without 'killall'. You have to open the processlist ('top') then just use the PID shown in the same line in which you can see "linux_server" somewhere in the column "COMMAND" for killing the process with 'kill' (example: kill 24363)!

Yep, you can do that - as long as you have the process ID :)
But killall linux_server or whatever does the same job :)
As for the log file, I guess you could pipe it to a file without any real problem :)
As for kicking players etc - nope. Not if you are running the standard Cube - at least not to my knowledge. As far as I am aware, its not possible to block anyone or set the game type etc. Only restrict to x number of players ( default is 4 I think), but you can set it to 1 on 1 by allowing only 2 connections for instance, or 8 for bigger games etc. And of course you can password it to only permit those with the password to play if you like...

I don't think using an ampersand will work. When you close the shell window, I suspect the shell will take out its children processes (jobs) with it. You should perhaps try looking at the "nohup" command instead - that will allow to create a process that doesn't die when you log out of the shell.
Hope that helps,
Lambros

#5068: & works | 24/7 Server

by Superdreadnought on 11/23/2005 14:11

The & works, cause my server is running since yesterday (and i've closed the shell multiple times since then) and i'm gonna try to keep it running 24/7.
Server adress: cube.servegame.org (8 Slots; Location: Europe, Germany)

#5069: sauerbraten music & stuff

by Devourer on 11/23/2005 17:51

Sauerbraten runs very ok for me, though I have sounds but no music. Strange.
But the important question is: What kind of Sauerbraten is it?
Sauerbraten Rheinische Art or is it Sauerbraten Westfaelische Art? It's important because of the raisins, you know...
