Yay! Quadropolis is finally back up, and it lost none of the content!
Everyone put up the maps you made during its absence!

ja, it's pretty straightforward. there are lots of little things that you learn over time, but the basics are simple:
--select vertices or faces with the select tool. this is under the modify tab, and will apply to whichever mode your in (vertex, face, or bone (i don't use the bone system))
--edit selected V/F with move, rotate, or scale. all are self explainatory
--selecting is additive, to go subtractive hold ALT, to deselect entirely press /
--adjust views with Pan Views button in lower left. click view you want to adjust and others will update with it, with exceptions involving 3D view
--put faces into the skin by selecting them, going into View > Skins, and then Edit > Get Position From Model. This has to be played with heavily in oder to make skins work, but once you got it it's not so bad.
--Finally, save to MD2 by going File > Export > export to MD2.
and that's q2mdl in a nutshell.

#4876: Jumping practise |

I've managed to do the basic rocket jumping (just - the last one is pretty hard to do so I don't mind admitting I got lucky) but what is strafe jumping and rifle jumping? I don't know any way of clearing such large spaces except to use rockets.

In cube, strafing is just a tad faster than running forwards..
So before you jump, use one of the strafe directions in addition to running forwards, and use your mouse to adjust your view ca 45° opposite the strafe direction (to be effectively running forwards again).. then jump :)
Rifle Jumping: Works exactly like rocketjumping, must often be used in conjunction with strafing.
Hint: youŽll need 2 rockets to make the last rocket jump :)

I needed three rockets to make that jump. Guess I need more practice :/

#4885: short freezes |

Since the last release (29-8 as well as the 22-8) I experience short freezes 1 or 2 seconds. I don't have this with the 2004 release.
I use SuSE 9.3, kernel 2.6.11.4. Athlon XP 3200+, and a graphicscard with a NVIDIA 6800 chip.
Someone told me there is a hack to solve this problem.
Is there ?

There's a new release of Orb. It features some gameplay and code changes and little graphics improvements, but no new maps. Get it here:
http://orbhome.com/orb2005.exe
I also made a skybox viewer (I think that's what it is) which comes with a skybox called Ogro Beach, featuring lots of Ogros on a beach, probably on some alien resort planet :)
http://orbhome.com/bob.exe
The links above will be active until the end of 2005 (or until the site runs out of bandwidth). If you need the stuff later, try here:

Wow, sorry to get you in that kind of trouble.
> Or is it possible to make a linux binary?
It's possible, absolutely, but I can't do it. I remember some time ago trying to compile under Knoppix but I barely manage on Windows so I failed.

Look for "fibres" in rendercubes.cpp to see what I did. About the makefile and binary - I probably won't be able to do anything with this, just keep it. Eventually later if anyone is interested in packaging a Linux release of Orb it may help.

How about a seperate zip archive? So linux/unix people can compile it by their self without the need of wine/windows to extract the files.

Ok. btw sorry for spamming on the Cube general thread I expected to get only one or two replies, in the spirit of "cool" and "sucks" :)
What should I exclude in the zip file? I imagine it should be the windows executable and .dll files, the screensaver, and also add the makefile stuff.

Yeah either exclude these files, or just include everything so windows people who dislike installers can be happy too.

All important Windows software comes with installers. People usually dislike installers that mess with the registry and system configuration but the Orb installer does nothing more than extract the files to a folder, create a desktop and start menu shortcuts, and erase the shortcuts when you uninstall, not touching anything else. Can't be that bad, it's a standard thing, plus I tried to make it as safe as possible. The issue is to give people on operating systems without Windows emulation a chance to compile. The problem is that some of the stuff will become useless, for example the screensaver animation needs to be rendered and packaged again in an executable, an avi file or the like. I think it would be best to make a release with the game media and sources only and asked wasda (hope his email works) to package something like this which may help people willing to compile on non-Windows systems. I know this solution is far from perfect but if it works him and for you, that would be my choice.
