You don't need to use only square sized textures, rectangle shaped textures work well for "doors" and "windows". example: 128 pixels wide by 256 pixels high for doors, 128 pixels wide by 64 pixels high for windows.
If you want I can email you some plugins that work in "photoshop" and paintshop" that make textures easy to "tile" (fit together). It's only 283KB in size and fun to use.
You will also need to experiment with the contrast and brightness of textures or else they will be far too bright and washed out looking when you add lights in your map.

I prefer to tile by hand, those tools tend to be very destructive...

Destructive indeed, even by hand.. You deprive the pic of its own edges and it fights back :)

Ooh, i could use that, MitaMAN. Send it to me!
Note that texture must be a power- if they're a single pixel off (127x128) the whole wall, ceiling, or floor will be skewed in a funny way.

#3863: ripping out ENet: possible ? |

hi folks!
i tried ripping ENet completely out of the cube engine (with a pure singleplayer mod in mind)....
it is somewhat dirty, since ENet goes deep into the code. i already removed about 70%, but some sections are hard or even impossible to get rid of, like something in client.cpp....
so, my question: is it possible to get rid of ENet completely?

I can't think of a reason why it should be that hard? All the messages that are sent are really for other clients, unlike games like half-life where the sender gets its own messages aswell. So for example in half-life you had to send a message for sound, you and all other clients would here it but in cube its just "play sound locally and send a message to other clients aswell.
Can you post the code where you think the problem is?

What you're doing is no good. I bet that won't stop you but from my perspective it's like cutting Cube's legs and putting it in a wheel-chair, hoping it'll do better in it. Well it won't.

I'm working on forked version of Cube called NuCube. It's a personnal project, so i dunno if i'll end with something, I didn't wanted to say it now, but I see many discutions about animated models and texturing... this is exactly what im doing.
To describe more precisely, I use the cube engine as a base but I try to add some new modules to improve the visual part of the engine. I'd like to add MD3 support and a texture shaders ala q3. Why q3, just because it's well documented and made its proofs. There're even editors for that. I dunno then if i'll add more stuff in it... if you have suggestions for the renderer you can tell me, i'll see what I can do.
Maybe soon, you will have a version of a new improved engine to make mod with. Maybe my code will be reusable in Sauerbraten, since im modifying the opengl module only and adding new modules... anyway Stay tuned.

@sinsky: why? i really don't need Net code, so why leaving it in? why should i leave something inside the engine what will never get used in my mod?.....
anyway: i will post if i get really problems removing net code...

Network support and the coopedit mode are some of the best things Cube has to offer, don't cut 'em. At some point you may change your mind, and if that happens you'll waste even more time getting them back.

2 things: I'm kinda new to this but...1: Is there any way to create stackable objects or stack the stock ones, and 2, are there any ways to make ceiling-mounted objects?

it should be very easy, as it can already work with just a local server, not using enet. But there's no gain to it either, other than an exe that is about 5kb smaller.

@Aardappel_: ok. the original idea was to rip it out cause of executable size, but if it is really just 5 kb, i think i leave it as it is.... :)

Forum is kinda 'different' indeed :P
You want to play cube? Download it here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/cube/cube_2004_05_22.tar.gz?download
then extract the file with something like winzip or winrar. Then just run cube.bat, which is in the cube main directory.

As far as Tuts go, I'll translate a level over from my MOD to cube that can act as another tutorial level. in the meantime play cube101, which is a great intro.
