I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. Is there any workaround in Linux or fix that I could use? I could play it in Windows, but I prefer to use Linux. I am using ATI's binary drivers 3.14

#3595: Makefile... |

Makefiles are really meant to be used with Linux. While some makefiles can work from GCC through CygWin, I don't think Cube's can.
There are three ways to build cube: the makefile, under linux, the visual studio project for VS2003 (can hack it to work with VS2002), and there used to be some people trying to get it to build with MinGW, but I don't know if that's up to date.
Besides, C++ is not for beginners. If you want to mod the game, you have to edit the code files with the changes you want and then use the makefile (or vs.net) to build the new .exe.
At any rate, the first step to programming on an existing project is to get it to compile - so if you can't do that yet then you can't mod yet. Still, it sounds like you've never touched C++ before, so I'd suggest starting on something simpler before tinkering with Cube - C++ is a powerful language, but also the biggest PITA.

#3598: Problems while running.. |

After I connect to an online game of Cube, I last several minutes and then everything freezes and the power light by my computer\'s power button starts blinking red, and I\'m forced to turn it off. This happens not only in Cube, but most online games.
I run on \'98, and have the latest DirectX. (9.0c) I recently wiped all of my data and reinstalled windows, and now this happens. Before the restart, I could play Cube forever without crashing.
Could anyone help?

2 possible reasons/2 possible solutions:
-overheat => check your hardware and replace defective parts
-normal Windows 98 crash => get a real OS (2K/XP/Linux)

I am running Ubuntu Linux 4.10 with a Radeon 9800 using ATI fglrx drivers. I tried to run cube_unix and I got an error similar to this. I replaced linux_client with the one from the ATI fix package and now I get the same error plus the bit at the beginning about version information. The screen goes black for a second, then the program bails out.
$ ./cube_unix

This forum sure seems to have "changed". Too bad. Not too long ago posts were more "intelligent", full of helpful comments and a sense of comradeship amoung the users. Maybe those of us early on in CUBE community were more "mature" or willing to show what we can do with Aard's great game (whatever state the game was in). I miss the "old" days.
BUT...I still love CUBE and love mapping for it.
You know what I really would like to see? How about some of the new comers to CUBE show us what they can add to the game (with their own skills, mapping, models, etc...) instead of just saying what they want or "could" do. Actions speak louder that words. Prove it.

Indeed. I'll post less stuff from now on, as for my contribution to Cube, it's very small but coming very soon.

sinsky, (and others) please don't take what I said as an insult (or something bad). It's just that it seems CUBE used to be "hey Cube is cool, let me show you guys what I did with it" instead of "hey Cube is cool, how can someone else make it better for me so it's more like my favorite game".
My biggest attraction to CUBE has been:
1. The great people on the forum.
2. How easy it is to map for and make good SP episodes (and MP maps).
3. Checking out the work others have done with CUBE.
4. How nice it looks for such a simple engine.
5. Aard, for creating for the whole thing for us to enjoy.
I'm just an old fart that misses the earlier community.

#3607: missing libsdl_image-1.2.so.0 |

I get
philt@ubuntu:~ $ cd cube
philt@ubuntu:~/cube $ sh cube_unix
./bin_unix/linux_client: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_image-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
philt@ubuntu:~/cube $
when I try to run Cube under Ubuntu Linux. Had it running ok at one time under Ubuntu (before a reinstall) and also under Fedora Core 2. Is this the Simple DirectMedia Layer lib - if so it is already installed!
Thanks!...

Philt, to get CUBE to run under Ubuntu I had to:
apt-get install libsdl-image1.2
apt-get install libsdl-mixer1.2
Good luck. CUBE is a great little game. :)

No it's not bad (at least I didn't take it that way), it's very actual and accurate. I'd better do more Cube stuff than writing in the forum. There are lots of forums and not so many cubes :)
