You can animate your model however you like. (The existing animations probably wouldn't work for your custom model anyway.)

Since I'm no modeler I can't give you a totally insightful reply or use the correct jargon - but -
from what I experimented with on a very old sauerbraten codebase with the MD2 models I can tell you that as a programmer you have to know where inside the model-file certain animations begin and end - meaning the frame-count.
These are hardcoded into the engine and in case of the MD2's come from the legacy of Quake - I know that MD5 is probably quite a bit different in this regard but I'm assuming the frame-count at least to be "a given" - just import and analyze the provided models ... wait - the monsters are all MD2 anyway, right - so there you have it: use the same frame-"sections" to provide whatever animation you want.

Replied via email:

It depends on what the error says.

#12640: Little help for a game

by wiimario on 10/22/2009 22:33

I'm new, i'm a 3d modeler for hobby and with some friends I'm doing a little game on the sauerbraten engine.
I have to ask some question abuout the models:

1 i work in autodesk maya does the engine supports mb files? If not what format does it support?
2Does the engine supports NURBS?
3How many polygons does the engine supports?
4Does the engine support smooth mesh?

Thanks, wiimario

1. no, the engien supports md2, md3 md5 and obj

3. I've modified a map to have over 2 million polygons (that was rather slow mind you :P), so it's whatever your hardware can do.
mind you, the model formats each have their limits

the answers to the rest I'm oblivious too

#12642: Commisioning Maps & Models

by cdxbow on 10/24/2009 07:48

I would be interested commisioning someone to develop some outdoor maps that would be released confrming to an open source license. A couple of the maps would have to look martian and suitable for Blood Frontier. The current BF maps give almost no sense of mars. Depending on price we may commisiion more, set in other environments. We also would like to commision a mech model.

If you are interested please contact me at cdxbow@yahoo.com.au. Don\'t forget to visit rebelmars.org

thanks a lot, but the third question is for polygons/nurbs per model. I know I noob, I haven\'t written it

#12644: WTF just happened?

by FatCharlie on 10/24/2009 22:48

So I was on this coop edit server, when all of the sudden this server message pops up saying that I was using speedhack. I don't even know what speedhack is, and I have never downloaded a hack of any kind for sauerbraten. Does anybody have any idea why I the server thought I was using this "speedhack"? thanks in advance.

Sauer crashes suddenly while playing. Terminal just says "illegal instruction".

I tested on a GeForce FX 5200 with the 173.14.20 drivers, and I was unable to reproduce your issue. It is conceivable you may have a damaged processor or system memory, unless there is some way to reproduce the bug that I am not managing to do.

#12648: Master Power

by BuRnItDoWn on 10/25/2009 18:16

I think that the next release of Sauer should have some changes in the master power. In 2 days, I have been banned from 4 servers. One was the RRR server, which I don't really care about, but on the other 3 I did what I usually do. I go onto the server, then say "hi". I wait for a minute to get a reply, then say "sendmap?". Now I either see the master say "bye" and a message saying that I was kicked pops up, or I am just kicked. These were just 3 servers that I picked because they were coop edit, my usual mode. I can no longer go on these servers for no reason but the master being too lazy to take 0 seconds to type "/mastermode 3", instead of "/mastermode 2".

The master power should be made to something like when the master says "kick", the person is instantly specced and a message pops up saying "kick [playername]? /no to veto.", or something to prevent people from being kicked when they have done nothing wrong, ascit is not appreciated by anyone when they are kicked needlessly, and can never go on the server again unless someone will be nice enough to go and clearbans for you.

This is also a very recent occurence. The only time that I had been kicked before the last week was when someone accidently kicked me instead of the real map****er.

This is hardly recent, it has been common practice on coopedit servers since the original Cube. The official line is: Go and find another server without asshats on it.

I tried but all of the others either seem to have to many people, or be private.

But there's a master command on the original Cube?

I'm not aware of any engine that supports NURBS whatsoever. They're great for controlling models, but they're also very render-intensive. Hence, they don't really have a place in gaming (yet). I would recommend working in polygonal mode as much as possible and trying your best to keep the polycount as low as possible. There is not a "correct" number or ceiling or anything... it really just boils down to a tradeoff. The more polys the fewer representations you can have on the same rigs. Or, to rearrange the equation, more polys means that you have to have more powerful rigs to run the same situation.

Basically, if you want to keep modeling in maya, get ready to export to .obj a lot, because you're going to have to do a lot of trial and error to learn what works best for your team.

Surely there is a function to export your NURBS model to a format made of triangles.
In fact, exporting to OBJ or MD{2,3,5} probably does this automatically.
