Sounds to me like you don't have the permissions set up right. Make everything in your Cube directory readable and execable to whatever users will be playing.

it's either what verbal said above, or it just cant read the image that cube uses as a letter map of sorts...
first, check your cube/data directory and make sure newchars.png is still there, not corrupted, and that the name is correct. if it's not there, you may have to re-install cube or get it from someone.

You're not going to find this very helpful, but I've seen that message before myself, and I can't remember what caused it. I don't believe it was either of the above. Sorry that I can't be more help.

I'm DYING to have something available for free and for Win users that would compile the code. I know it's a pain in the ass to for someone to figure this stuff out and spoonfeed it to the rest of us, but it would be simple for someone to just be able to fiddle with the the code until the inspiration comes.

2nd try:
I'm DYING to have something available for free and for Win users that would compile the code. I know it's a pain in the ass for someone to figure this stuff out and spoonfeed it to the rest of us, but it would simply own for someone to be able to jump in and fiddle with the the code until the inspiration comes to do something great.

Darthvim, run cube_unix with the -wxxxx -hxxx parameters.
Example: "./cube_unix -w1024 -h768"

I'm having a big problem which seemed simple, but isn't!
I use a brazilian ABNT2 keyboard on linux. In the place where it's supposed to be a tilde, there's a single/double quote key. At first i tried to create a "console" or "showconsole" binding in autoexec.cfg, but this command doesn't seem exist. Then i figured i'd have to use some brute force and edited X11 keyboard configuration so the right "win" key would output a tilde, but that did't work either.
So, is there a simple way to change the console binding? If not, is there a hard way? :-)

Guessing: you need to put everything into a *folder* (create it and name it cube) and you need to put it there by unzipping into that folder with "use folder names" option on.
You should end up with something like 12 files and 8 folders in that cube folder... each of those folders containing files and/or folders.
