Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

A suggestion for the path that Sauerbraten will take

by Danfun64 on 10/31/2015 22:01, 4 messages, last message: 11/03/2015 18:07, 1540 views, last view: 04/14/2024 01:37

Cube 2 is nearing the end of its development path. The user Speculant has said that "Cube filled a needed role as a scalable, stable fast online FPS while Sauerbraten was being developed. Now, Sauerbraten is that scalable, stable fast online FPS while Tesseract is being developed." It has gotten to the point where unofficial clients have been made by it. And yet development keeps moving on in a slow pace. There is a sense of uncertainty because nobody knows when the next release will come, and the protocol will never be stabilized.

Sauerbraten is very close to a finished product. I suggest that the rumored upcoming 2015 be the last major one, with any release made afterwards limited to security fixes bug fixes that don't change the protocol number. hypernova^ has made a similar point in the "Cube 2 Still being developed" thread. "once development of Cube 2 started, Cube 1 soon wrapped up with a strong final release, then all focus was shifted to Cube 2. I think the same thing needs to happen here with Sauer and Tesseract."

Sauerbraten's playerbase won't die for years, if it dies at all (even Quake still has an active community). However, it's time to pass the torch to Red Eclipse and Tesseract when it comes to active development. That way a stable demo protocol can be used for the rest of Sauerbraten's long lifetime, and unofficial clients won't have to play catch-up anymore.

Sorry, I disagree with this sentiment.

I will continue to make Sauerbraten releases.

You will have to accept that this is an open source, strictly non-commercial project. As such, it does not magically have the resources to develop on a schedule that satisfies everyone's whims.

I really, really don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with trying to force the project to die.

I feel obliged to drag out a cliche Batman quote: "Some men just want to watch the world burn."

not everyone wants the project to die, just the people who have no idea what they are talking about and spend 0 time on sauer.

sauerbraten forever!

I suggest Danfun64 to start his own mod based on Cube Engine 2 and stop telling nonsense on this forum while starting to that on his very own webpage.

It seems there's a bit of misunderstanding here. As far as I know, none of us who are proposing a new path for Sauerbraten are trying to make the game die (Sauerbraten will not die as long as Tesseract keeps a different gameplay), nor asking you to spend more time developing (we are just wondering why Sauerbraten vs. Tesseract). For me, I just see Tesseract as a new awesome opportunity for the Cube engine to expand. However, we all know that these are your projects. It seems that you are happy with the current state of development, so everything's cool. Now I will shut up and stop asking Tesseract++ ^_^
