Master server policy

Since the issue has come up in a few instances lately, multiple servers violating master server rules and getting banned, and some people seem to be taking it as if they are being unfairly singled out, I thought it is probably time for a refresher.

If you want to keep your server registered on the master server, you have to abide by a few rules. Otherwise, your server is temporarily banned until you fix the issues.

The rules:
1. The master/auth system can't be messed with. All things someone can do with auth can normally do must function, regardless of whatever server mods you have in place.
2. The gameplay needs to remain unmodified. The Sauerbraten master server is for the Sauerbraten game only, not other games.

These are not rules we made up just recently to pick on people. These policies have been in place since before Sauerbraten even existed, within Cube.

I am eminently fair about enforcement - if you fix the issues, your server gets back in. And for that matter, I am very lenient about what sort of server mods are allowed, but those few rules above need to be respected.

I was just kicked out of FR[bloodfactory by this stupid noob who was team killing flag carriers (because he wanted the flag) and didn't like what I had to say. Can someone please take this idiots master away? I know he can change it , but his screen name was "wtf". Anyone know him?

Still not sure if you got it: only the MASTER-server (the one which gives you the list) is hosted by the official game devs.
Those servers CONNECTED TO the list are private, that also includes the FR servers. When you want someone to lose their master status on an FR server, you have to find an FR admin. Don't they give you their website address upon connecting to the server?

Anyways, to this topic are more things going like "server XY is running selfmade gamemodes!" or "server XY ignores my global authcode!"

I would like to report another server which ignores the official auth key.

Name: Face to Face Capture
IP address: 88.191.246.101
Port: 20010
Problem:
You can claim master by using auth, but all your abilities are disabled for 727491 seconds (so "kind of" infinite).
Somehow, the play time of the server has been set to 59:59 seconds also (since when can servers set their own playtime?!).

Playtime is not part of the gameplay or the auth system, so it is irrelevant.

Also, this * seconds before * seems more like a bug to me than something done intentionally. If you can, try and contact the server owner or someone who may know him and make sure what the case is.

I also think this "wait 0.7 million seconds before doing anything" is a bug, since it also affects very basic things such as map voting or chat, regardless if you have master or not.
I don't think it is trolling auth users, just someone not being careful enough coding and/or not betatesting enough.

Adjusting the playtime certainly does affect the gameplay.
You get a very different approach of playing when a team only has to score once instead of 10 times on ctf. Or to capture just more than half of the bases instead of just all.
You play way more careful when you only got 1 minute left than if there are 10 minutes remaining.
So playtime shouldn't be underrestimated.

I'm admin of FR| servers. BloodFactory should be an open server, therefore anyone can take master, first come first served.
I'm also developper of SuckerServ, mod used on "Face to Face Capture" (and FR|).
raz is right, it's a bug about integer overflow (on totalmillis) and the flood protection if I remember fine. It should have been fixed though. If it appears, server need to be restarted. (same problem appeared on Hopmod, which is what SuckerServ is based on)

As long as the server itself does not modify the gameplay of any gamemodes, it will be fine. However if your server is public and populated by "cheaters" in the sense of wallhacks, aimbots and the such, rest assured legit people will complain about it and attempt to have someone remove it from the masterserver. Unless you're planning on making a honey-pot, in which case go ahead.

Why should server hosts be blamed if the clients cheat? I guess they could establish bans n stuff, but technically it's not the hosts who modified gameplay.
I don't see a violation of any kind in this, at least not on the host side.

In fact I would go so far that automated cheat protection could be called "modified gameplay". Though I guess that it could be seen as an exception from this rule. Ah well, exceptions confirm the rule.


What kinda annoys me is that some servers do not only block cheats, but also very simple stuff, like camping.
Camping is a (even though rather unpopular) legit strategy and preventing it is a major influence in gameplay.
"You didn't move far enough for XY seconds. Forced suicide" That's definitely a change in gameplay.

suicizer, the problem is the cheaters, not the servers.

I hope we aren't face to this paradox : cheats that cause gameplay change if they are allow and can't be prevented without gameplay change.

So I read over the policy statement, particularly the second point. That one seems a little weird to me simply because from my experience with sauer it goes so unenforced that before I read this thread, I didn't think rule#2 existed. Now I'm not gonna name any server names or addresses but anyone who's been playing sauer a while knows that there are servers hosting all sorts of different types of gameplay. I've seen races, mazes, zombies, mafia, stopmotion animating using teles, even a pornography server with... uh, some imported textures.
I don't particularly mind the mods, and frankly I think eihrul has more than enough sense to know which servers to ban; I trust his judgment completely. I just wanna know if there is something official I'm missing that allows these servers to remain on the master server, or if they just stay cus a lot of people like them and they aren't hurting anyone.(except the above mentioned porn server, pretty sure bling's Magic palace got taken down a while ago :P)
