Workaround for crashing on map load with ATI Catalyst

by eihrul on 02/20/2010 06:22, 14 messages, last message: 07/02/2010 03:41, 5268 views, last view: 04/16/2024 16:24

After some investigating I managed to track down a nasty bug in ATI Catalyst on all operating systems that was the cause of Sauerbraten crashing when loading maps or on multiplayer connects. The temporary workaround for Trooper edition is to put the following in your autoexec.cfg:

oqdynent 0

I have put a much more invasive fix in SVN/next edition, so that this shouldn't be necessary in the future, and I have also reported the bug to ATI, but god only knows if or when they will respond to a bug submitted by an indie dev.

Create a text file named autoexec.cfg and put it in there.

Alternatively, if you can't figure out how to create the autoexec.cfg file with notepad... Then you can try in Sauer, go Options -> autoexec.cfg, add in the fix, and then hit the save button. Finally, exit Sauer and restart.

I was getting crazy by trying every Catalyst from 10.4 downto 10.2 with no success. Maybe the problem has been introducted in 9.12 with the added support for OpenGL 3.2 extension? It didn\'t happen with Catalyst 8.10! However performance with the latest Catalysts is much better (when the game doesn\'t freeze and/or when the VPU recover lets you restore the video card and play for a while).

So now I can use the latest drivers without freezes! :-)

I hope ATI will fix this soon. What does the \"oqdynent 0\" option do?

Please note that if I entered it in Sauerbraten (Options | autoexec.cfg) it didn\'t work (\"unknown command\"), although I had written it correctly. I had to manually edit autoexec.cfg file to make it work. It seems that entering the command in Sauerbraten makes the autoexec.cfg file contain that command preceded by some spaces... and this seems to be causing the \"unknown command\" error message.

It turns off hardware occlusion of player models. This is sort of bad to do in general, but it is better than causing the entire OS to crash instead.

I'm using linux mint 9 on my asus 1201t netbook and it has the ati catalyst driver installed. I tried this and it worked perfectly. What i did was create a file called autoexec.cfg in my saurbraten folder and copied and pasted your line into it. Thanks so much for the help, cant wait for the next release!

I was not aware they started making netbooks with AMD Neons yet, but apparently they do. That is an interesting beast you have.
