Speedmapping

Hey all,

Anyone want to do a speedmapping contest? I suddenly have unexpected amounts of time on my hands tomorrow afternoon because of the snowstorm in my area, and thought it might be fun.

I will announce a theme tomorrow at 4pm EST (that's 6pm in Chile, 10pm in Paris, midnight in Moscow, 8am in Sydney, 6am Tokyo, and 1pm in Los Angeles), and we'll post what we've got after one hour AND after two hours. I will figure out awards based on the quality of the submissions and the people who win. In all likelihood the prizes will be service-based, such as a free art commission or logo design.

Hope some of you can make it!

the theme shouldn't be anything too broad, because then people might be able to pull out their old maps that fit the theme

#3: New Date

by tentus_ on 12/23/2009 07:06

Heh heh, sorry for not making a theme announcement... I was discouraged by lack of interest. If people are interested in actually doing this, please suggest a better time/date.

Don't worry about the theme, it is specific enough that I doubt anyone will copy an existing map.

I'd like to participate, but I'm more likely to help out someone with a vision than lead anything... Are there any plans for the teams yet? I.E. how many per team, who, if they're allowed to switch, which server(s)...

possible problems:

we need some kind of guideline because we cant let edit them offline, they could take an old map
or we could get someone who takes a look on a team building something and you can upload your map here then.

But for this event there are still not enough guidelines..

how will the map be voted? by beautifulness?
by theme? style? playability?
because one single hour is not much..

i need about 10 min for the config file if i always want to add tex/effects/blend etc

also are there given themes? or can we invent them by ourselves, is there a layout? can we make them on our own. etc

For those who don't know, the Cube community has a history of speedmapping. Editing offline is part of that history.

What I'm planning to do is announce a time once I get feedback. Once that time comes around, I announce the theme. The theme is graphical in nature: I personally don't care if you rough out a basic CTF map or something in advance. This isn't some kind of design competition, it's more like a sketch jam. The point is to have fun and get some maps made for a community that seems to be hibernating a bit.

Not trying to shoot down the idea of doing it online, it's just not what I've done in the past. If you want to team up with someone that's cool, i'd like to see what you guys make. :)

Only time speedmapping ever worked was back in the Cube 1 days, and only live in the IRC channel. Trying to organize it on a website is doomed to failure. :)

Baww. Not sure I agree. Why do you figure it's doomed? (Are we sure that our expectations are the same?)

It takes days just to get a conversation going to agree about the parameters of a speedmap on the forums, but it takes a few minutes on IRC at best.

For those on IRC though (I personally am not an IRC fan, my spare time coming in frequent but very short bursts). I'm trying to get some activity here on the forums going and get some new maps turned out.

Forgive me if I've forgotten any over the years, but the parameters for a speedmap are time(s), theme, and any restrictions, such as "has to be SP" or "must have ammo for every weapon", right? The time is being decided slowly, yes. But the other parameters would take just as long to type and broadcast on a forum as on IRC. I don't see how doing it here makes it doomed. Just a little different.

#13: Aard's Speedmapping Thread

by LeftClicker on 01/18/2010 03:14

Aard did this a while ago ( http://cubeengine.com/forum.php4?action=display_thread&thread_id=160&start=0 ), you may want to emulate him.

8 plus 4 = Couldn't they just use a freaking captcha? It's not my fault I don't know my timestables!

If you can't do simple *addition* then something is terribly wrong and you should seek help (from people other than those here).

I was joking. I hate CAPTCHAs much more than I hate math.

#16: Argh

by LeftClicker on 01/19/2010 03:39

But I just realized, the joke's on me, because Quin was obviously joking, which I didn't realize, but is obvious because if I couldn't do my "timestables" I wouldn't have been able to post.
/me stops thread hijacking.
/me needs to do this more often.
Sincerely,
/me
