You're on a mac, so run the launcher, go to the server tab, and push the start server button. But I assume you've done that - so what is the error message it is giving?

i already mentioned this but here it goes again:
this message is really misleading, because many people are gonna get it even if they don't have a firewall - because they are behind a router.

you have to configure the port forwarding on your router.

so in my internets URL bar i type http;//"my router IP"

NAT>Port Forwarding

then there is

Description = Sauerbraten
Public Port = 28785
Protocol Type = UDP
LAN IP Address = ***** { Not gonna tell >=| }
LAN Port = 28786

did you consider i have done this ?

First, use both TCP and UDP.

Secondly forward port PUBLIC:28785 to port LAN:28785 on your lan IP (not PUBLIC:28785 to LAN:28786), then do the same thing for port 28786.

re:Loki -- did u consider mentioning it .. and the amount of people asking w/o a clue about firewalls so that would've helped them already. ;-)

Quin: TCP is definitely not required, TCP is only used by sauerbraten for communicating with the masterserver, which all happens via standard http (on port 80)

Well, that was a clear & concise description of your issue, for sure.

To state another (obvious) possible error:
you need to forward both ports;
the higher one is for the info-port - if that is forwarded correctly your server will register ... the lower one is for the actual players - only if it is forwarded correctly will the server be actually able to host games to people outside your LAN.

As you described your routers options with that prefix of "NAT", I'll just assume your router is actually capable of it - because, as you might or might not be aware, there are routers out there that can't! (might want to check portforward.com though, to be sure, IIRC they have a list of commonly distributed models that fail to live up to expectancies).

Have you, by chance, ever hosted other services behind the firewall, that'd answer the Q too!?!

how about making a note of your external IP and asking people to manually connect .. that would help you if you maybe have only the game-port forwarded, not the info-port.
To manually connect they would have to type "/connect 123.123.123.123" .. with appropriately correct address of course;
or even your dynamic hostname - if you know that/have e.g. a dynamic-DNS service-provider.

Giving us more details would certainly help giving you more helpful responses :)

"LAN IP Address = ***** { Not gonna tell >=| }"
What's the point in hiding that? We can't access it unless we're on your network. Perhaps you're thinking of your actual IP address, which will be revealed anyway if you register the server on the master server.

Let me guess, your router's LAN IP address is 192.168.1.1? or maybe its 192.168.0.1?

This is not possible with the vanilla Sauerbraten sources. Please note that the masterserver EULA forbids modified servers from registering with it, it is recommended that you use the game as it was intended to be used.

hopmod is indeed a good example of an acceptable server modification, so I should point out that only modifications that do not modify existing gameplay/mechanics are "tolerated".

Unfortunately, too many people get carried away when they start modding stuff, and it produces undesired/undefined results when regular players use that server. They then often take this to be a problem with Sauerbraten, and not that specific server, which then creates a false representation of the engine.

So for the most part, when making a modified server or client, you should always change the fpsserver.h:getdefaultmaster() function to point to your own (or a third party) master server.

only if your a Pucking n00b that can't tell that there running a server side mod and even if your a n00b most n00bs are smarter then that. & I have seen some cool server side game play mod's that where fun and a good change of pace gezz this is how quake III and most other games work is that you can change stuff on the server 2 effect game play or script whole new game mode
if this is the reason cuz there worried about some n00b making a hey hey look at me mod then you have had nothing to be worried about only about 25% of the players can CODE and most are great guys with common sense and I just DO not SEE how a mod even a BAD one
would "would create a false representation of the engine." "< thats some funny stuff you have do you do comedy ?"
gezz so wat if you have some n00b let saying his pc crashed when he plays on server X running mod Y its part of playing its not YOUR problem its no different that some n00b crying cuz his 10 year old pc can't run cube as it well

this is open Src game and Regardless of WHO WAT AND Where the master server is run not letting people that don't have the resonances to start a full blown mod that may have made something great and enjoyable is way worse then the OFF chance a mod may or may not go bad and some n00b comes crying here

bottom line I think you all paranoid and its hurting us
